How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your specific dose based on your condition.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) by a healthcare professional.

Important

The infusion usually lasts 3 or 24 hours and is given every 2 or 3 weeks, as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Minor allergic reactions like flushing, rash, itching.
  • Infections, mainly upper respiratory tract infection and urinary tract infection.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Sore throat or mouth sores, painful and red mouth, diarrhea, feeling sick or being sick (vomiting).
  • Hair loss.
  • Muscle pain, cramps, joint pain.
  • Fever, severe chills, headache, dizziness, tiredness, paleness, bleeding, easier bruising.
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in arms and legs (signs of nerve damage).
  • Blood tests may show low platelet count, low red or white blood cell count, low blood pressure.
  • Temporary, mild changes to nails and skin, reactions at the injection site (local swelling, pain, redness).
  • Blood tests may show slower heart rhythm, severely increased liver enzymes.
RARE
  • Low white blood cell count with fever and increased infection risk (febrile neutropenia).
  • Nerve effects causing muscle weakness in arms and legs (motor neuropathy).
  • Shortness of breath, blood clot in the lung, lung scarring, lung inflammation, fluid in the lungs.
  • Bowel blockage, bowel rupture, colon inflammation (ischemic colitis), pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis).
  • Itching, rash, red skin (erythema).
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis), abdominal lining inflammation (peritonitis).
  • Fever, dehydration, weakness, swelling, general feeling of being unwell.
  • Severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction (anafylaksia).
  • Blood tests may show increased blood creatinine, a sign of kidney problems.
  • Heart failure.
  • Shock caused by infections (septic shock).
  • Heart palpitations, heart conduction problems, fast heartbeat, heart attack, respiratory distress.
  • Exhaustion, sweating, fainting, significant allergic reactions, vein inflammation caused by blood clot (thrombophlebitis), swelling of face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat.
  • Back pain, chest pain, pain in hands and feet, chills, abdominal pain (stomach pain).
  • Blood tests may show severe increase in bilirubin (jaundice), high blood pressure, and blood clots.
  • Irregular, fast heartbeat (atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia).
  • Sudden disorder of blood-forming cells (acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome).
  • Optic nerve and/or vision problems.
  • Hearing loss or reduction (ototoxicity), ringing in ears (tinnitus), vertigo.
  • Cough.
  • Blood clot in blood vessels of abdomen and bowel (mesenteric thrombosis), colon inflammation sometimes with persistent severe diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis, neutropenic colitis), fluid in abdomen (ascites), esophagus inflammation, constipation.
  • Severe hypersensitivity reactions including fever, red skin, joint pain and/or eye inflammation (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), localized skin peeling (epidermal necrolysis), redness with irregular red (fluid-filled) spots (erythema multiforme), skin inflammation with blisters and flaking (exfoliative dermatitis), hives, nail detachment (patients under treatment should protect hands and feet from sunlight).
  • Loss of appetite (anorexia).
  • Severe and potentially fatal hypersensitivity reactions with shock (anaphylactic shock).
  • Liver dysfunction (liver necrosis, hepatic encephalopathy, both with reported fatalities).
  • State of confusion.
  • Skin hardening/thickening (scleroderma).
  • Sudden tightening of airway muscles (bronchospasm).
  • Metabolic complications after cancer treatment (tumor lysis syndrome).
  • Eye diseases, such as thickened and swollen macula (macular edema), seeing flashes of light (photopsia), and floating spots, dots, specks, and 'cobwebs' in the field of vision (vitreous floaters).
  • Vein inflammation (phlebitis).
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus.
  • Severe condition causing easy bleeding, easy blood clots, or both (disseminated intravascular coagulation, DIC).
  • Redness and swelling on palms or soles, which may cause skin peeling.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to paclitaxel or any other ingredient, especially polyoxyl 35 castor oil.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if your white blood cell count is too low. Your doctor will check this with blood tests.
  • Do not use if you have a severe, uncontrolled infection and are being treated for Kaposi's sarcoma.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have severe allergic reactions like trouble breathing, chest tightness, dizziness, or skin rash.

  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have fever, severe chills, sore throat, or mouth sores (signs of bone marrow problems).
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or legs (signs of nerve damage). Your dose may need to be lowered.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver problems, as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart rhythm problems.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you develop severe or lasting diarrhea with fever and stomach pain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have previously had radiation therapy to the chest, as it may increase the risk of lung inflammation.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a sore or red mouth (sign of inflammation) and are being treated for Kaposi's sarcoma. Your dose may need to be lowered.
  • This medicine must always be given into a vein. Giving it into an artery can cause pain, swelling, redness, and warmth.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. You must use effective birth control during treatment and for 6 months after. Do not breastfeed.
