Voltaren

Voltaren is a pain and anti-inflammatory medicine that reduces pain, swelling, and fever caused by conditions such as rheumatic diseases, surgery, injuries, and kidney or gallstone attacks.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual daily dose is one 3 ml ampoule (75 mg of active substance); in some cases, two ampoules (150 mg) may be given per day.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection deep into a muscle, typically in the buttocks, using sterile technique.

Important

Do not use for more than two days. The maximum daily dose is 150 mg (two ampoules).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, stomach pain, gas
  • Decreased appetite
  • Changes in liver function shown in blood tests
  • Skin rash
  • Reaction at the injection site, including pain or hardening
RARE
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure, palpitations, chest pain
  • Drowsiness
  • Stomach inflammation (gastritis)
  • Liver problems
  • Itchy rash (hives)
  • Tissue death at the injection site
  • Low red blood cells (anemia), low white blood cells (leukopenia)
  • Confusion, depression, trouble sleeping, nightmares, irritability, mood changes
  • Tingling or numbness in hands/feet, tremors, changes in taste
  • Vision problems (blurred vision, double vision), ringing in ears (tinnitus)
  • Constipation, mouth ulcers, swollen tongue, problems with the esophagus, severe upper abdominal cramps, especially after eating
  • Itchy, red, burning rash (eczema), skin redness, hair loss, itching, blood in urine, pus at injection site
  • Severe allergic skin reactions, including red/swollen patches, blisters, and itching (fixed drug eruption)
  • Chest pain, possibly a severe allergic reaction (Kounis syndrome)
  • Mild abdominal cramps and tenderness with rectal bleeding or bloody diarrhea

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you have or have had heart problems (like heart attack or stroke) or blocked blood vessels.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to diclofenac, sulfites, or other NSAID pain relievers (like ibuprofen or aspirin), or if you have had asthma, rash, or swelling after taking them.
  • Do not use if you have or have had stomach ulcers, bleeding in the stomach or intestines, or dark/bloody stools.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney, liver, or heart failure.
  • Do not use if you are in the last three months of pregnancy.

  • Serious reactions at the injection site, including pain, redness, swelling, hardening, sores, bruises, pus, and skin damage (also called Nicolaus syndrome), have been reported. Contact a doctor immediately if you notice these.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For short-term use only. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Increases swelling, worsens renal and heart failure and causes cardiovascular events. Increases risk of bleeding, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 16.9.2024)
