How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is usually one 0.088 mg tablet three times a day for Parkinson's disease or once a day for restless legs syndrome; your doctor will gradually increase the dose.

Method

Take the tablets with water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 3.3 mg for Parkinson's disease and 0.54 mg for restless legs syndrome.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Uncontrolled, jerky movements (dyskinesia)
  • Sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Strong urge to behave unusually (impulse control disorders)
  • Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that aren't there)
  • Confusion
  • Tiredness (feeling exhausted)
  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
  • Swelling, usually in the legs
  • Headache
  • Low blood pressure
  • Unusual dreams
  • Constipation
  • Blurred vision
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss, including reduced appetite
  • Worsening or spreading of restless legs symptoms (augmentation)
RARE
  • Paranoia (e.g., excessive worry about one's well-being)
  • Delusions (false beliefs)
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden onset of sleep
  • Memory loss
  • Increased movements and inability to stay still (Hyperkinesia)
  • Weight gain
  • Allergic reactions (such as rash, itching)
  • Fainting
  • Heart failure (heart problems that can cause shortness of breath or ankle swelling)
  • Abnormal hormone secretion
  • Restlessness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hiccups
  • Pneumonia
  • Delirium (confusion, impaired sense of reality)
  • Mania (agitation, elevated mood, excessive enthusiasm)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to pramipexole or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, see, hear or feel things that are not there (hallucinations), uncontrolled movements (dyskinesia), muscle stiffness (dystonia), sleepiness, mental health issues (psychosis), heart or blood vessel problems, or if your restless legs symptoms get worse.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family notice new or unusual behaviors, such as gambling, overeating, compulsive shopping, or increased sexual urges, or if you experience excessive excitement or confusion.
  • Be careful with alcohol and sedatives, as they can affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience hallucinations or sudden sleepiness.
  • Ask your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant. This medicine is generally not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

  • Do not stop taking this medicine or change your dose without first talking to your doctor, as sudden stopping can cause severe symptoms like depression, anxiety, and pain.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
