How to Use

Dosage

The doctor will decide the correct dose based on the patient's age and needs. Doses typically range from 2.5 mg for infants (3 months to under 1 year) to 10 mg for adults (10 years and older).

Method

Gently pull the patient's cheek outwards and place the tip of the syringe into the space between the gum and the inside of the cheek. Slowly press the plunger until all the liquid is given. If instructed by a doctor, half the dose can be given on each side of the mouth.

Important

Only give one full syringe dose per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Drowsiness or loss of consciousness
RARE
  • Rash, hives, and itching
  • Agitation, restlessness, hostility, rage or aggression, excitability, confusion, euphoria (excessive happiness), or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  • Muscle spasms and tremors (uncontrolled muscle shaking)
  • Decreased attention
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty coordinating muscle movements
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Temporary memory loss; how long this lasts depends on the amount of medicine given
  • Low blood pressure, slow heart rate, or facial and neck redness (flushing)
  • Laryngospasm (spasm of the vocal cords causing breathing difficulties and noisy breathing)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Hiccups

Important Warnings

  • Do not give if the patient is allergic to midazolam, benzodiazepines (like diazepam), or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not give if the patient has myasthenia gravis (a nerve and muscle disease causing muscle weakness).
  • Do not give if the patient has severe breathing problems at rest, as this medicine can make them worse.
  • Do not give if the patient has sleep apnea syndrome (a condition causing repeated pauses in breathing during sleep).
  • Do not give if the patient has severe liver disease.

  • Do not give to children under 3 months of age, as there is not enough information for this age group.
  • This medicine can cause temporary memory loss after administration; patients should be monitored carefully.
  • Avoid giving this medicine to patients with a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
  • Life-threatening events are more likely in patients with breathing difficulties or heart disease, especially with higher doses.
  • Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of benzodiazepines.
  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as they can increase its sedative effects and make the patient very drowsy.
  • If pregnant or breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine.
  • High doses during the last 3 months of pregnancy may affect the baby's heart rate, feeding ability, breathing, and muscle tone at birth.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness, forgetfulness, and affect concentration and coordination, which can make driving or operating machinery unsafe. Do not drive or use machines until fully recovered.
  • Seek immediate medical help if the patient experiences severe breathing difficulties (slow/shallow breathing, blue lips, or breathing stopping), signs of a heart attack (chest pain spreading to neck/shoulders/left arm), or a severe allergic reaction (swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat with difficulty swallowing/breathing, pale skin, weak/rapid pulse, or feeling faint).
