Dimethyl fumarate Glenmark

This medicine is used to treat relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in patients aged 13 and older, by protecting the brain and spinal cord from damage and potentially slowing down the disease.

How to Use

Dosage

Starting dose: 120 mg twice a day for the first 7 days. Normal dose: 240 mg twice a day.

Method

Swallow capsules whole with water. Do not split, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew. Take with food to help reduce common side effects.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg (240 mg taken twice daily).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Facial redness or feeling of warmth, heat, burning, or itching in the body (flushing)
  • Diarrhea (loose stools)
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Abdominal pain or cramps
RARE
  • Inflammation of the stomach and intestines (gastroenteritis)
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Stomach lining inflammation (gastritis)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Low white blood cell count (lymphopenia, leucopenia)
  • Protein in urine (albuminuria)
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood (ALAT, ASAT)
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity)
  • Decreased platelet count
  • Liver inflammation and increased liver enzymes with bilirubin
  • Shingles (herpes zoster infection), with symptoms like blisters, burning, itching, or pain on one side of the body or face, along with fever, weakness, numbness, and severe red patches.
  • Severe watery runny nose
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Painful menstruation

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have suspected or confirmed Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare brain infection.
  • This medicine can affect your white blood cells, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will arrange regular blood tests during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney, liver, or stomach/intestinal disease, or a serious infection (like pneumonia) before taking this medicine.
  • Shingles (herpes zoster) can occur. Tell your doctor immediately if you suspect you have symptoms of shingles (e.g., blisters, burning, itching, or pain on the skin).

  • Symptoms of PML (e.g., new or worsening weakness, clumsiness, vision changes, confusion, speech difficulties) can be similar to MS flare-ups. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice these.
  • A rare but serious kidney disease (Fanconi syndrome) has been reported. If you have increased urination, thirst, muscle weakness, or bone pain/fractures, report these to your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks (over 30% alcohol by volume) for one hour before and after taking the capsules to prevent stomach inflammation.
  • If you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction (rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness/fainting), stop the medicine and seek immediate medical help.
