How to Use

Dosage

Start with 120 mg twice daily for 7 days. After that, the usual dose is 240 mg twice daily.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not divide, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew them. Taking the medicine with food can help reduce common side effects.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose is 480 mg (240 mg twice daily).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Facial redness (flushing) or feeling warm, hot, burning, or itching in the body.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Nausea.
  • Stomach pain or cramps.
  • Inflammation of the stomach and intestines (gastroenteritis).
  • Vomiting.
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia).
  • Stomach lining inflammation (gastritis).
  • Gastrointestinal upset.
  • Burning sensation.
  • Hot flashes, sensation of heat.
  • Skin itching (pruritus).
  • Rash.
  • Reddish or pinkish patches on the skin (erythema).
  • Hair loss (alopecia).
  • Low white blood cell count (lymphopenia, leukopenia) in the blood. If this happens, your body may have a harder time fighting infections. If you get a serious infection (e.g., pneumonia), tell your doctor immediately.
  • Protein (albumin) in urine.
  • Increased liver enzymes (ALAT, ASAT) in blood.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity).
  • Decreased platelet count.
  • Liver inflammation and increased liver enzymes (ALAT or ASAT) combined with bilirubin.
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth or tongue (angioedema).
  • Wheezing, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath (dyspnea, hypoxia).
  • Dizziness or loss of consciousness (hypotension).
  • Shingles (herpes zoster infection) with symptoms like blisters, burning, itching or pain, typically on one side of the upper body or face, along with fever, weakness, numbness, or red patches with severe pain.
  • Severe, watery runny nose (rhinorrhea).
  • Headache (more common in children and adolescents).
  • Stomach pain or cramps (more common in children and adolescents).
  • Vomiting (more common in children and adolescents).
  • Sore throat (more common in children and adolescents).
  • Cough (more common in children and adolescents).
  • Painful periods (more common in children and adolescents).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or suspect a rare brain infection called PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy).
  • This medicine can affect your white blood cell count, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will perform regular blood tests to check these.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have severe kidney or liver disease, stomach or bowel disease, or a serious infection (like pneumonia).
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of shingles (herpes zoster infection), such as blisters, burning, itching, or pain.

  • If your MS symptoms worsen or you notice any new symptoms like weakness or vision changes, tell your doctor right away, as these could be signs of a serious brain infection (PML).
  • If you notice increased urination, unusual thirst, muscle weakness, bone fractures, or pain, talk to your doctor immediately as these could be signs of a rare kidney disease called Fanconi syndrome.
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks for one hour before and after taking this medicine, as it can cause stomach inflammation (gastritis), especially if you are prone to it.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, unless your doctor has clearly stated it is necessary after discussing it with you.
