How to Use

Dosage

For adults, 1200–2700 mg daily, divided into 2–4 doses. The dose may be increased for severe infections. For children (1 month – 12 years), 20–40 mg per kg body weight daily, divided into 3–4 doses. Adolescents over 12 years receive the adult dose, but not more than 40 mg/kg/day.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine either as an injection into a muscle or as a slow drip (infusion) into a vein. The infusion takes about 10–60 minutes.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 4800 mg. A single injection into a muscle should not exceed 600 mg. A single infusion into a vein should not exceed 1200 mg per hour.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • vein infection or inflammation at the injection site
  • increase in a certain type of white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • inflammation of the mouth lining
  • diarrhea
  • red, raised skin rash
  • hardening at the injection site (after muscle injection)
  • changes in liver function (seen in blood tests)
RARE
  • severe diarrhea with abdominal pain or fever (may indicate serious bowel inflammation)
  • low blood pressure, feeling faint, dizziness, sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting (especially if given too quickly)
  • severe allergic reactions like sudden wheezing, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, eyelids, or lips, and widespread rash or itching
  • severe skin reactions with red spots, blisters, peeling skin, fever, cough, feeling unwell, or swollen gums, tongue or lips
  • yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • fluid retention causing swelling in legs, ankles or feet, shortness of breath, or nausea (signs of kidney problems)
  • low white blood cell count, leading to increased infections (fever, chills, sore throat, mouth sores)
  • changes in taste or smell
  • muscle relaxant effect
  • abdominal pain
  • inflammation of the esophagus lining
  • nausea and vomiting
  • hives (itchy rash)
  • skin inflammation and redness (erythema multiforme)
  • itching
  • pain, hardening, abscess, or irritation at the injection site
  • general digestive problems
  • vaginal infection
  • unexplained bruising or bleeding longer than normal, or small reddish-purple spots on skin (may indicate low platelet count)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any other ingredient in this medicine. Tell your doctor if you have a penicillin allergy.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, muscle disorders (like myasthenia gravis or Parkinson's disease), or a history of bowel inflammation.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe allergic reactions such as sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, rash or itching.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you get a severe skin rash with red spots, pus-filled blisters, peeling skin, fever, cough, feeling unwell, or swollen gums, tongue or lips.
  • Contact your doctor if you have severe, long-lasting, or bloody diarrhea (with abdominal pain or fever) during or up to 3 weeks after treatment, as this could be a sign of serious bowel inflammation.

  • Inform your doctor immediately if you notice reduced urination, swelling in your legs, ankles or feet, shortness of breath, or nausea, as these may be signs of acute kidney damage.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially muscle relaxants (used during surgery) and blood thinners, as this medicine can interact with them.
  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.
