How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the dose based on the type and severity of your infection.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of water. You can take them with or without food, but avoid taking them at the same time as milk or calcium-rich drinks 1-4 hours before or after the dose. Take your dose at the same time each day.

Important

Your doctor will prescribe the maximum daily dose for your specific condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Joint pain and joint inflammation in children
RARE
  • Fungal infections
  • Increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
  • Decreased appetite
  • Hyperactivity or restlessness
  • Headache, dizziness, sleep problems, or taste disorders
  • Vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion (heartburn) or flatulence
  • Increase in certain blood values (transaminases and/or bilirubin)
  • Rash, itching, or hives
  • Joint pain in adults
  • Poor kidney function
  • Muscle and bone pain, general discomfort (asthenia) or fever
  • Increase in alkaline phosphatase levels in the blood
  • Muscle pain, joint inflammation, increased muscle tension and cramps
  • Inflammation of the bowel (colitis) associated with antibiotic treatment
  • Changes in blood count (low white blood cells, high white blood cells, low neutrophils, anemia), increased or decreased blood clotting factors (platelets)
  • Allergic reaction, swelling (edema), sudden swelling of the skin and mucous membranes (angioedema)
  • Elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia)
  • Decreased blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia)
  • Confusion, disorientation, anxiety reactions, strange dreams, depression (which can lead to suicidal thoughts or attempts), or hallucinations
  • Numbness and tingling, increased sensitivity to stimuli, skin numbness, tremor, or dizziness
  • Vision problems, including double vision
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus), hearing loss or impairment
  • Heart palpitations (tachycardia)
  • Blood vessel widening (vasodilation), low blood pressure, or fainting
  • Shortness of breath, including asthma-like symptoms
  • Liver dysfunction, jaundice (cholestatic icterus), or hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Photosensitivity
  • Kidney failure, blood or crystal in urine, urinary tract infection
  • Fluid retention, heavy sweating
  • Increase in amylase enzyme levels
  • Decrease in red blood cells (hemolytic anemia), severe decrease in certain white blood cells (agranulocytosis), sudden decrease in red and white blood cells and platelets (pancytopenia), and bone marrow depression
  • Allergic reaction known as serum sickness-like reaction
  • Mental disorders (psychotic reactions that can lead to suicidal thoughts or attempts)
  • Migraine, coordination disorders, unsteady gait, smell disorders, brain pressure (intracranial pressure and pseudotumor cerebri)
  • Distorted color vision
  • Inflammation of blood vessel walls (vasculitis)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Liver cell death (liver necrosis), which can very rarely lead to life-threatening liver failure
  • Small pinpoint bleeding under the skin (petechiae), skin reactions, and rashes
  • Worsening of myasthenia gravis symptoms

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Stop taking immediately and tell your doctor if you have previously had any severe side effects from quinolone or fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
  • If you have a severe allergic reaction (chest tightness, dizziness, nausea, fainting), stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical help.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor if you feel pain or swelling in your joints or tendons. Rest the affected area.
  • Seek emergency medical help immediately if you experience sudden, severe pain in your abdomen, chest, or back, as this could be a serious blood vessel problem.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience sudden shortness of breath, swelling in your ankles or abdomen, or new heart palpitations.
  • If you have epilepsy or another neurological condition and experience new symptoms, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor right away if you get nerve damage symptoms like pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness.
  • If you experience mental health changes or worsening depression/psychosis, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you get severe or bloody diarrhea during or after treatment, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Contact an eye doctor immediately if your vision worsens or you have other eye problems.
  • Your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight and UV light; avoid strong sun and tanning beds.
  • If you notice signs of liver damage (loss of appetite, yellow skin, dark urine, itching, stomach tenderness), contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you get an infection with fever and a severe worsening of your general condition, contact your doctor immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
