How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, usually between 100 mg and 900 mg per day. For children under 15, the usual dose is 100-400 mg daily.

Method

Take Zyloric after food and swallow it with a glass of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 900 mg, but your doctor may adjust this.

Possible Side Effects

  • Skin rash

  • Liver problems, such as hepatitis, or abnormal liver tests
  • Fever, chills, headache, muscle pain (flu-like symptoms), and general malaise
  • Severe allergic reactions affecting many organs, with symptoms like fever, rash, joint pain, and changes in blood and liver values
  • Skin changes such as sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, red and swollen eyes (conjunctivitis), widespread blistering, or skin peeling
  • Bleeding from lips, eyes, mouth, nose, or genitals
  • Blood problems, which may cause easy bruising, sore throat, or other signs of infection
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • High body temperature
  • Blood in urine (hematuria)
  • High blood cholesterol levels (hyperlipidemia)
  • General weakness or feeling unwell
  • Weakness in legs, numbness, unsteadiness, inability to move muscles (paralysis), or loss of consciousness
  • Headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, or vision problems
  • Chest pain (angina pectoris), high blood pressure, or slow pulse
  • Male infertility or erectile dysfunction
  • Breast enlargement in men and women
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Taste changes
  • Cataracts (clouding of the eye lens)
  • Hair loss or discoloration
  • Depression
  • Loss of voluntary muscle coordination (ataxia)
  • Tingling, prickling, or burning sensation on the skin (paresthesia)
  • Fluid retention causing swelling (edema), especially in the ankles
  • Abnormal glucose metabolism (diabetes); your doctor may check your blood sugar levels
  • Inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (aseptic meningitis), with symptoms like stiff neck, headache, nausea, fever, or confusion (seek immediate medical attention)
  • Lichenoid rash (itchy, red-purple rash and/or thread-like whitish-grey lines on mucous membranes)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Zyloric if you are allergic to allopurinol or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Stop taking Zyloric and contact your doctor immediately if you develop a severe skin rash with fever, sores in your mouth, eyes, or genitals, or if your skin peels.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, heart problems, high blood pressure (especially if taking diuretics or ACE inhibitors), or thyroid problems.
  • If you are of Han-Chinese, Thai, or Korean origin, you may have a higher risk of serious skin reactions. Discuss this with your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine. Zyloric is not recommended during breastfeeding.

  • This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or coordination problems. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.
  • Avoid taking Zyloric with 6-mercaptopurine or azathioprine; if you must, your doctor will adjust the dose and monitor your blood closely due to an increased risk of severe blood disorders.
  • If you are taking aluminium hydroxide, take Zyloric at least three hours apart to ensure it works effectively.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider potential interactions. (updated 16.9.2024)
