How to Use

Dosage

For the first 6 days, take one 150 mg tablet once daily. After that, take one 150 mg tablet twice daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew, crush, or divide them. Take tablets at least 8 hours apart and avoid taking them right before bedtime. You can take them with or without food.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is two 150 mg tablets, totaling 300 mg.

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Feeling depressed
  • Feeling anxious or irritable
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Shaking (tremor)
  • Headache
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Stomach pain or other stomach problems (like constipation)
  • Changes in taste
  • Dry mouth
  • Fever
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Rash (sometimes due to an allergic reaction), itching
RARE
  • Ringing in the ears, vision problems
  • Increased blood pressure (sometimes severe), flushing
  • Loss of appetite (anorexia)
  • Feeling weak
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling confused
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Twitches, muscle stiffness, uncontrolled movements, problems with walking or coordination (ataxia)
  • Fainting, feeling faint when standing up quickly due to low blood pressure
  • Feeling irritated or hostile; unusual dreams (including nightmares)
  • Memory loss
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Severe allergic reactions; rash with joint and muscle pain
  • Urinating more or less often than usual
  • Severe skin rashes in the mouth or other body parts that can be life-threatening
  • Worsening of psoriasis (red, thickened patches of skin)
  • Yellowing of skin or whites of eyes, increased liver enzymes, hepatitis
  • Changes in blood sugar levels
  • Feeling unreal (depersonalization); seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Restlessness, aggression, delusions, paranoia
  • Urinary incontinence (unintended passing of urine)
  • Suicidal thoughts during or shortly after Zyban treatment
  • Loss of contact with reality or inability to think clearly (psychosis); other symptoms may include hallucinations and/or delusions
  • Sudden and intense fear (panic attack)
  • Stuttering
  • Reduced red blood cells (anaemia), white blood cells (leukopenia), and platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Low blood sodium (hyponatremia)
  • Changes in mental state (e.g., restlessness, hallucinations, coma) and other effects such as body temperature above 38 °C, increased heart rate, unstable blood pressure, exaggerated reflexes, muscle stiffness, lack of coordination and/or gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea) when Zyban is used with medicines for depression

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Zyban if you are allergic to bupropion or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take Zyban if you are already taking other medicines containing bupropion (e.g., for depression).
  • Do not take Zyban if you have or have had seizures, epilepsy, or eating disorders.
  • Do not take Zyban if you have severe liver disease (like cirrhosis) or a brain tumor.
  • Do not take Zyban if you regularly drink a lot of alcohol and have recently stopped or are planning to stop during treatment.

  • Do not take Zyban if you have bipolar disorder (manic depression).
  • Do not take Zyban if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Stop taking Zyban and contact your doctor immediately if you have a seizure.
  • If you feel depressed or have suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor or go to a hospital immediately.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if Zyban affects your concentration or judgment (e.g., dizziness or confusion).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider risk of convulsions and numerous potential interactions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases risk of falls. (updated 12.2.2024)
