How to Use

Dosage

The typical adult dose is 200 mg taken five times a day, about every 4 hours while you are awake, for 5 days. Your doctor may adjust this dose for your specific condition.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth with water, as directed by your doctor.

Important

The maximum daily dose can be up to 4000 mg, but your doctor will tell you the right dose for you. Remember to drink plenty of fluids during treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Itching, rashes (including sensitivity to light)
  • Fatigue, fever
RARE
  • Hives, hair loss (Note: Hair loss can also be caused by illness)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Temporary increase in liver values (bilirubin and liver enzymes)
  • Sudden localized swelling of the skin, mucous membranes, or internal organs (angioedema)
  • Increase in blood urea and creatinine values
  • Decrease in red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
  • Agitation, confusion, tremor, muscle coordination problems, speech difficulties, hallucinations, psychotic symptoms, convulsions, drowsiness, brain disease, coma (These usually get better on their own and mostly happen in patients with kidney problems or other risk factors.)
  • Liver inflammation, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Acute kidney damage, kidney pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredients.
  • If you have kidney problems or are an older adult, it's very important to drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can rarely cause a severe allergic reaction (like swelling of face/lips, or difficulty breathing). If this happens, get medical help right away.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to get pregnant, or think you might be, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines you are taking, as they can affect Zovirax.
