How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your condition and age. For adults, it's typically 5-10 mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours. For children, it's typically 10-20 mg per kg every 8 hours, depending on age and type of infection.

Method

Zovirax is given slowly as an intravenous infusion (into a vein) over one hour.

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor based on your specific condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of the vein
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes
  • Itching, hives, rashes (including sensitivity to light)
  • Increase in blood urea and creatinine levels
RARE
  • Decrease in red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
  • Headache, dizziness, agitation, confusion, tremor, problems with muscle coordination, speech and pronunciation difficulties, hallucinations, psychotic symptoms, convulsions, drowsiness, brain disease, coma. These usually go away on their own and are most common in patients with kidney problems or other risk factors.
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Temporary increase in bilirubin levels, jaundice, liver inflammation
  • Sudden localized swelling of the skin, mucous membranes, or internal organs (angioedema)
  • Kidney problems and pain
  • Fatigue, fever, local inflammatory reactions

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to acyclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you have kidney problems, make sure to drink enough fluids.
  • It's especially important for older patients to stay well-hydrated.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, have recently taken, or might take, as some medicines can affect how Zovirax works.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

  • In very rare cases, this medicine can cause a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). If you experience severe allergic symptoms like swelling of the face and lips or difficulty breathing, get medical help right away.
