How to Use

Dosage

For adults, a typical starting dose is 100 mg (5 ml) once daily, or 50 mg twice daily when taken with other medicines. For children (6 years and older, weighing at least 20 kg), the dose is 1 mg per kilogram of body weight once daily. Your doctor will adjust the dose.

Method

Shake the bottle well. Measure your dose with the syringe and swallow it directly, or mix it with water, orange juice, or yogurt. You can take it with or without food. Do not mix with fizzy drinks.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 300–500 mg (15–25 ml). For children, it is usually 6–8 mg per kilogram of body weight, up to a maximum of 500 mg (25 ml) daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling agitated, irritable, confused, depressed
  • Difficulty sleeping, strange thoughts, anxiety, emotional changes
  • Poor muscle coordination, dizziness, poor memory, sleepiness, double vision
  • Slow thinking, lack of focus, speech problems, tingling skin, shaking, uncontrolled eye movements
  • Loss of appetite, low bicarbonate levels in blood (which helps prevent blood from becoming too acidic)
  • Kidney stones
  • Rashes, itching, allergic skin reactions, fever, tiredness, flu-like symptoms, hair loss
  • Bruising easily
  • Weight loss, nausea, indigestion, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation
  • Swelling in feet and legs
RARE
  • Anger, aggression, thoughts of self-harm or suicide attempts
  • Vomiting
  • Gallbladder inflammation, gallstones, urinary tract stones
  • Lung infection/inflammation, urinary tract infection
  • Low potassium in blood, seizures
  • Hallucinations, memory loss, coma
  • Breathing problems, shortness of breath, lung inflammation
  • Pancreas inflammation (severe stomach or back pain)
  • Liver problems, kidney failure, increased creatinine in blood (a waste product normally removed by kidneys)
  • Severe rashes or peeling skin (may also feel unwell or have a fever)
  • Abnormal muscle breakdown (muscle pain or weakness) leading to kidney problems
  • Swollen lymph nodes, blood disorders (fewer blood cells, increased infection risk, pale skin, tiredness, fever, easy bruising)
  • Decreased sweating, overheating
  • Glaucoma (increased eye pressure, eye pain, blurred or worsened vision)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Zonisamide Desitin if you are allergic to zonisamide, other ingredients in this medicine, or other sulfonamide medicines (e.g., some antibiotics or diabetes medicines).
  • Contact your doctor right away if you have difficulty breathing, swelling of your face/lips/tongue, a severe rash, or signs of overheating (high body temperature, little or no sweating, fast heart rate/breathing, confusion, muscle cramps).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide.
  • Drink plenty of water to prevent kidney stones and overheating, especially in warm weather. Contact your doctor if you have sudden back/stomach pain, painful urination, or blood in your urine.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 6 years. Women of childbearing age must use effective birth control during treatment and for one month after. Do not breastfeed during treatment or for one month after.

  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy or less alert, especially when you start taking it or when your dose is increased. Be careful when driving or using machines.
