Zomacton is a growth hormone used to treat growth problems in children who don't have enough growth hormone or have Turner syndrome.

How to Use

Dosage

For growth hormone deficiency in children, the usual dose is 0.02-0.03 mg per kg of body weight daily. For Turner syndrome, the usual dose is 0.05 mg per kg of body weight daily.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection under the skin using a syringe.

Important

The maximum daily dose is about 0.04 mg per kg of body weight for growth hormone deficiency in children, and 0.05 mg per kg of body weight for Turner syndrome.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling, especially in hands and feet, due to fluid buildup.
  • Slightly high blood sugar.
  • Joint pain.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Headache.
  • Numbness, tingling, burning, or crawling sensation on the skin.
  • Underactive thyroid.
  • Immune reaction to growth hormone, seen in blood tests (antibody formation).
  • Increased muscle stiffness.
  • Reactions at the injection site.
  • Weakness.
  • Decreased glucose tolerance.
  • Stiffness in arms and/or legs.
  • Difficulty falling asleep or sleeping.
RARE
  • Anemia.
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Dizziness.
  • Double vision.
  • Swelling of the optic nerve.
  • Vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, nausea.
  • Changes at the injection site (e.g., tissue shrinkage, bleeding, hardening, or overgrowth).
  • Low blood sugar.
  • Increased phosphate levels in blood.
  • Muscle wasting.
  • Bone pain.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Tumors, including benign and malignant.
  • Sleepiness.
  • Involuntary eye movements.
  • Personality changes.
  • Urinary problems (e.g., incontinence, blood in urine, frequent or increased urination).
  • Breast enlargement in males.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Abnormal kidney function tests.
  • Type 2 diabetes.
  • Numbness and tingling in certain body areas.
  • Fluid buildup around the brain (leading to headaches, blurred vision, nausea, or vomiting).
  • High blood pressure (in children).
  • Leukemia (not more common than in children generally).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if your child has stopped growing (growth plates are closed).
  • Tell your doctor if you have an active tumor (cancer) or have not finished cancer treatment.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient in Zomacton.
  • Do not use if you are very ill due to complications from open heart or stomach surgery, severe injuries, or breathing problems.
  • Do not use if your child has chronic kidney disease and is undergoing a kidney transplant.

  • Do not use if you have Prader-Willi syndrome but do not also have growth hormone deficiency.
  • If you get severe or repeated headaches, vision problems, nausea, or vomiting, tell your doctor right away. These could be signs of fluid buildup around the brain.
  • If you start limping or have hip or knee pain, tell your doctor right away.
  • Do not use Zomacton if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have diabetes or a family history of diabetes, your blood sugar levels will need to be checked often.
  • If you have muscle pain or pain at the injection site, tell your doctor, as Zomacton contains metacresol which can cause muscle inflammation.
