How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 25-50 mg daily, which can be adjusted by your doctor up to 200 mg daily.

Method

Take Zoloft once a day, either in the morning or evening, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 200 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling tired or sleepy, headache, dizziness
  • Nausea (feeling sick), diarrhea, dry mouth
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Problems with ejaculation (for men)
RARE
  • Shakiness or tremor, muscle problems (like stiffness, twitching), numbness or tingling
  • Upset stomach, constipation, vomiting, stomach pain
  • Changes in appetite, anxiety, nervousness, nightmares, grinding teeth
  • Vision problems, ringing in the ears
  • Fast heartbeat, hot flashes, sweating more than usual, rash
  • Back, joint, or muscle pain
  • Sexual problems (like low sex drive, irregular periods in women, erection problems in men)
  • Feeling generally unwell, chest pain, weakness, fever, weight changes
  • Severe skin reactions (like blistering rash)
  • Allergic reactions (swelling of face/lips, trouble breathing)
  • Yellow skin or eyes (signs of liver problems)
  • Serotonin syndrome (confusion, fast heartbeat, sweating, stiff muscles)
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Manic episode (feeling extremely high, energetic, or irritable)
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Zoloft if you are allergic to sertraline or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take Zoloft with certain other medicines called MAO inhibitors or pimozide, as this can cause serious side effects.
  • Talk to your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, especially when starting the medicine.
  • If you have a history of seizures, bipolar disorder, liver problems, heart conditions, or bleeding issues, tell your doctor before taking Zoloft.
  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking Zoloft, as it can increase the amount of medicine in your body.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 12.2.2024)
