How to Use

Dosage

A typical dose is 5 mg, given once a year.

Method

It is given as a 15-minute infusion into a vein once a year.

Important

This medicine is given once a year, so there is no daily maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fever

  • Flu-like symptoms (e.g., tiredness, chills, joint and muscle pain)

  • Swelling and/or pain at the infusion site
  • Irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
RARE
  • Swelling, redness, pain, itching, or sensitivity to light in the eyes
  • Ear pain, ear infection, or discharge from the ear, which may be signs of bone damage in the ear
  • Unusual thigh bone fractures
  • Low phosphate levels in the blood
  • Pain in the mouth and/or jaw, swelling, non-healing sores in the mouth or jaw, pus from sores, numbness or heavy feeling in the jaw, or loose teeth. These can be signs of jawbone damage (osteonecrosis).
  • Severe allergic reaction, including dizziness and difficulty breathing, swelling mainly in the face and throat, low blood pressure, dehydration related to acute phase reactions (symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea after dosing).
  • Kidney problems (e.g., reduced urine output).
  • Flu
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Reduced red blood cells
  • Loss of appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Drowsiness, possibly with reduced alertness and awareness
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Tremors
  • Temporary loss of consciousness
  • Eye infection or painful/red irritation and inflammation
  • Vertigo
  • High blood pressure
  • Flushing
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Indigestion

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to zoledronic acid, other bisphosphonates, or any ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have very low calcium levels in your blood.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have jaw pain, swelling, non-healing sores in your mouth, or loose teeth. This could be a sign of a serious jawbone problem.

  • Your doctor will check your kidney function with blood tests before each dose. Drink at least 2 glasses of water a few hours before your infusion to prevent dehydration.
  • Take calcium and vitamin D supplements as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy after treatment.
