How to Use
Dosage
The usual dose is 5 mg.
Method
It is given as an intravenous infusion into a vein once a year by a doctor or nurse, taking at least 15 minutes.
Important
This medication is given once a year, not daily. Therefore, there is no maximum daily dose.
Possible Side Effects
COMMON
- •Fever
- •Headache
- •Dizziness
- •Nausea or vomiting
- •Muscle, bone, or joint pain
- •Flu-like symptoms, such as tiredness and chills
- •Swelling or pain at the infusion site
- •Irregular heartbeat
- •Muscle cramps, numbness, or tingling, especially around the mouth, due to low calcium
RARE
- •Eye problems like swelling, redness, pain, itching, or sensitivity to light
- •Unusual fractures of the thigh bone
- •Ear pain, ear infection, or discharge from the ear, which may be signs of bone damage in the ear
- •Pain, swelling, or non-healing sores in your mouth or jaw, discharge, numbness, or loose teeth, which may be signs of jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis)
- •Kidney problems, such as reduced urine output
- •Severe allergic reactions, including dizziness, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or low blood pressure
- •Symptoms of dehydration, such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea after the dose
Important Warnings
- Do not use if you are allergic to zoledronic acid, other bisphosphonate medicines, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
- Tell your doctor if you have very low calcium levels in your blood or severe kidney problems.
- This medicine should not be given if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
- Tell your doctor or nurse if you have any mouth or dental problems, if you smoke, or if you have cancer, as this medicine can cause jaw bone damage.
- Drink at least 2 glasses of water a few hours before your infusion to help protect your kidneys.
