How to Use
Dosage
The usual single dose is 4 mg, but your doctor may give you a lower dose if you have kidney problems.
Method
A healthcare professional will give you this medicine as an infusion (drip) into a vein over at least 15 minutes, using a separate IV line. Drink enough water before treatment to prevent dehydration.
Important
For bone complications, you will receive one infusion every three to four weeks. For high blood calcium levels, you usually receive only one infusion.
Possible Side Effects
COMMON
- •Headache and flu-like symptoms (fever, tiredness, weakness, drowsiness, chills, bone, joint, and muscle pain).
- •Digestive problems like nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
- •Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis).
- •Low red blood cell count (anemia).
- •Low phosphate levels in the blood.
- •Severe kidney problems (detected by blood tests).
- •Low calcium levels in the blood.
RARE
- •Pain, swelling, numbness in the mouth or jaw, or loose teeth. These could be signs of jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis).
- •Irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation).
- •Severe allergic reaction with shortness of breath and swelling of the face and throat.
- •Irregular heart rhythm due to low calcium levels.
- •Kidney disorder called Fanconi syndrome (detected by urine tests).
- •Seizures, numbness, and muscle twitching (tetany) due to low calcium levels.
- •Ear pain, ear infection, or discharge from the ear, which can be signs of bone damage in the ear.
- •Bone death (osteonecrosis) in other bones, especially in the hip or thigh bone.
- •Kidney inflammation (tubulointerstitial nephritis) with reduced urine volume, blood in urine, nausea, or general ill feeling.
- •Hypersensitivity reactions.
- •Low blood pressure.
- •Chest pain.
- •Skin reactions (redness and swelling) at the infusion site, rash, itching.
- •High blood pressure, shortness of breath, dizziness, anxiety, sleep problems, taste changes, tremor, tingling or numbness in hands and feet, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, dry mouth.
- •Low white blood cell and platelet counts.
- •Low magnesium and potassium levels in the blood.
- •Weight gain.
- •Increased sweating.
- •Drowsiness.
- •Blurred vision, watery eyes, sensitivity to light.
- •Sudden coldness with fainting, weakness, or loss of consciousness.
- •Shortness of breath with wheezing or coughing.
- •Hives (urticaria).
- •Slow heart rate.
- •Confusion.
- •Unusual thigh bone fractures, especially in patients receiving long-term osteoporosis treatment.
- •Interstitial lung disease (inflammation of tissue around lung air sacs).
- •Flu-like symptoms, including joint inflammation and swelling.
- •Painful red and/or swollen eyes.
- •Fainting due to low blood pressure.
- •Severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain, sometimes disabling.
Important Warnings
- Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding or are allergic to zoledronic acid, other bisphosphonates, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have had kidney problems.
- Tell your doctor and dentist if you have pain, swelling, numbness in your jaw, or a feeling of a heavy jaw, or if you have lost a tooth. Maintain good oral hygiene and have regular dental check-ups during treatment.
- This medicine can cause low calcium levels in your blood. If you experience muscle cramps, dry skin, or a burning sensation, tell your doctor immediately. You will be given calcium and vitamin D supplements if needed.
- Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines, especially aminoglycosides (for infections), thalidomide (for certain blood cancers), other zoledronic acid medicines, or antiangiogenic medicines (for cancer).
