How to Use

Dosage

4 mg as a single dose.

Method

Given as a 20-minute infusion directly into a vein.

Important

Typically one infusion per treatment session, not daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low phosphate levels in the blood.
  • Headache and flu-like symptoms, including fever, tiredness, weakness, chills, and bone, joint, or muscle pain.
  • Stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis).
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
RARE
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Chest pain.
  • Skin reactions (redness, swelling) at the infusion site, rash, itching.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Dizziness.
  • Anxiety.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Taste changes.
  • Tremors.
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Constipation.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Low white blood cell and platelet counts.
  • Low magnesium and potassium levels in the blood.
  • Weight gain.
  • Increased sweating.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Blurred vision, watery eyes, sensitivity to light.
  • Sudden coldness with fainting, weakness, or loss of consciousness.
  • Shortness of breath with wheezing or coughing.
  • Hives.
  • Slow heart rate.
  • Confusion.
  • Rare thigh bone fractures, especially with long-term osteoporosis treatment. Contact your doctor if you have pain or weakness in your thigh, hip, or groin.
  • Lung disease (inflammation in the tissue around the air sacs).
  • Flu-like symptoms, including joint inflammation and swelling.
  • Painful red and/or swollen eyes.
  • Fainting due to low blood pressure.
  • Severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain, sometimes disabling.
  • Kidney inflammation (tubulointerstitial nephritis): symptoms include reduced urine output, blood in urine, nausea, and general unwellness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to zoledronic acid, other bisphosphonates, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or suspect you are pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had kidney problems.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you experience pain, swelling, or numbness in your jaw, or a feeling of heavy jaw, or if a tooth has fallen out, as these can be signs of jaw bone damage.

  • Your doctor will check your blood with tests before and during treatment.
  • This medicine can cause low calcium levels in the blood. You may need calcium and vitamin D supplements. Report any muscle cramps, dry skin, burning sensations, irregular heartbeat, or seizures to your doctor immediately.
