How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is 4-8 mg, taken 1-2 hours before cancer treatment or surgery. Additional doses of 8 mg may be taken 12 hours later or twice daily for up to 5 days, as prescribed by your doctor.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is typically 16 mg. For children, the maximum daily dose is 8 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Feeling of warmth or flushing
  • Constipation
RARE
  • Seizures
  • Movement disorders
  • Irregular heartbeat or slow heart rate
  • Chest pain
  • Low blood pressure
  • Hiccups
  • Heart rhythm problems (sometimes causing sudden loss of consciousness)
  • Temporary blurred vision or other vision disturbances
  • Temporary vision loss
  • Widespread blistering rash and peeling skin (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Raised, itchy rash (hives)
  • Swelling, sometimes of the face and mouth area (angioedema), causing breathing difficulties or loss of consciousness.
  • Sudden chest pain or a tight feeling in the chest.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Zofran if you are using apomorphine (a medicine for Parkinson's disease).
  • Do not take Zofran if you are allergic to ondansetron or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are allergic to similar medicines like granisetron or palonosetron.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had heart problems, such as an irregular heartbeat.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have bowel problems.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver disease, as your doctor may need to lower your dose.
  • Do not use Zofran during the first three months of pregnancy, as it may slightly increase the risk of a baby being born with a cleft lip and/or palate.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking Zofran, as the medicine can pass into breast milk and affect your baby.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden chest pain or a tight feeling in your chest.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific cautions. May prolong the QT interval especially with other preparations prolonging QT. Take interactions into account. (updated 20.5.2024)
