How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take; usually 8 mg before treatment or surgery, and again if needed.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

Important

For adults, the maximum dose is usually 16 mg per day; a child's dose is set by the doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Feeling of warmth or flushing
  • Constipation
RARE
  • Seizures
  • Movement disorders
  • Irregular or slow heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Low blood pressure
  • Hiccups
  • Higher liver enzyme values (without symptoms, seen in blood tests)
  • Dizziness (especially with fast IV injection)
  • Temporary blurred vision or visual disturbances
  • Heart rhythm disorders (sometimes causing sudden loss of consciousness)
  • Temporary loss of vision
  • Widespread blistering rash and skin peeling (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Raised and itchy rash (hives)
  • Swelling of face/mouth (angioedema)
  • Difficulty breathing or loss of consciousness due to swelling
  • Sudden chest pain or tightness in the chest

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Zofran if you are taking apomorphine (a medicine for Parkinson's disease).
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to ondansetron or similar medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had heart problems, like an irregular heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have bowel problems or liver disease.
  • Get medical help right away if you feel sudden chest pain or tightness in your chest during or after treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific cautions. May prolong the QT interval especially with other preparations prolonging QT. Take interactions into account. (updated 20.5.2024)
