How to Use

Dosage

Typically 500 mg intravenously once daily for 1-2 days, followed by oral medication for a total treatment duration of 7-10 days.

Method

The medicine is given as an infusion directly into a vein by a healthcare professional. The infusion will last at least 60 minutes and should not be given as a quick injection or into a muscle.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Pain at the injection site
  • Inflammation at the injection site
  • Changes in blood test results (e.g., changes in white blood cell count)
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Flatulence
  • Loose stools
RARE
  • Fungal infections (e.g., in mouth or vagina)
  • Other infections (e.g., lung, throat, stomach flu)
  • Low white blood cell count or other blood changes
  • Swelling of skin or allergic reactions
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nervousness, sleeplessness, anxiety, confusion or hallucinations
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, fainting or seizures
  • Taste or smell disorders, tingling or numbness, or muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)
  • Vision problems or ear problems (e.g., deafness, ringing in ears)
  • Palpitations, abnormal heart rhythm or low blood pressure
  • Hot flushes, shortness of breath or nosebleeds
  • Constipation, indigestion, stomach inflammation or pancreatitis
  • Difficulty swallowing, abdominal bloating, dry mouth, belching or mouth sores
  • Skin rash, itching, hives, dry skin, severe sweating or light sensitivity
  • Joint, muscle, back or neck pain
  • Urinary problems or kidney pain/inflammation
  • Irregular periods or testicular disorder
  • Swelling (general or facial), weakness, feeling unwell, fatigue, chest pain or fever
  • Abnormal liver function, severe hepatitis, liver cell death or jaundice
  • Severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Acute kidney failure or kidney inflammation

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to azithromycin or similar antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
  • Contact a doctor if you develop prolonged, bloody diarrhea.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart disease or low potassium or magnesium levels.

  • If your baby (under 6 weeks old) experiences vomiting or irritability after receiving this medicine, contact a doctor immediately.
