How to Use

Dosage

One 250 mg tablet once a day, or as directed by your doctor.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole. You can take your dose with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is determined by your doctor. Do not take more than prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Changes in blood test results (e.g., in white blood cell count, eosinophils, or bicarbonate levels)
  • Flatulence
  • Uncomfortable feeling in the abdomen
  • Loose stools
RARE
  • Fungal infections (like oral thrush), vaginal infections, or other infections (pneumonia, bacterial, throat, stomach/gut, respiratory)
  • Low white blood cells, hypersensitivity (allergic reactions), or severe allergic reactions (like anaphylaxis, DRESS syndrome)
  • Nervousness, insomnia, agitation, aggression, anxiety, confusion, or hallucinations
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, vertigo, tingling or numbness, fainting, seizures, overactivity, impaired vision, or loss or change of smell or taste
  • Palpitations, hot flashes, irregular heartbeats (including fast heart rate, prolonged QT interval), or very low blood pressure
  • Loss of appetite, constipation, indigestion, stomach inflammation (gastritis), difficulty swallowing, abdominal bloating, dry mouth, belching, mouth ulcers, increased saliva, severe gut inflammation (pseudomembranous colitis), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), or tongue discoloration
  • Skin swelling, rash, itching, hives, dermatitis, dry skin, excessive sweating, or severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS syndrome, or rash with pus-filled bumps), or photosensitivity (skin reaction to sunlight)
  • Osteoarthritis, muscle pain, back pain, neck pain, joint pain, or worsening of myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)
  • Urinary problems, kidney pain, sudden kidney failure, or kidney inflammation
  • Irregular periods or testicular disorder
  • Swelling (general, facial, or peripheral), weakness, malaise, fatigue, chest pain, fever, pain, post-procedure complications, hearing loss (including deafness, ringing in ears), low blood platelets, anemia from red blood cell breakdown, or abnormal liver/kidney blood test results (e.g., in potassium)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Zithromax if you are allergic to azithromycin, other ingredients in this medicine, or other macrolide/ketolide antibiotics (like erythromycin).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver problems, as your doctor may need to check your liver function or stop your treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, or have recently taken, to avoid interactions.
  • Contact your doctor if you get long-lasting, bloody, or severe diarrhea during or after treatment.
