Ziprasidon Viatris is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia in adults and moderate manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorder in adults and young people (10-17 years).

How to Use

Dosage

The recommended dose for adults is 40–80 mg twice a day with meals.

Method

Take capsules whole with food, without chewing, crushing, or opening. Take one capsule in the morning with a substantial breakfast and one capsule with the evening meal, at the same time each day.

Important

Do not exceed a maximum daily dose of 160 mg.

  • Involuntary or unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue, muscle stiffness, or slow movements

RARE
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat, dizziness when standing up, which may indicate abnormal heart function or low blood pressure when standing

  • Reduced sex drive
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Difficulty controlling movements, involuntary movements, or restless legs
  • Feeling of pressure in the throat or nightmares
  • Seizures, involuntary eye movements (in a specific direction), clumsiness, speech problems, numbness, tingling sensation, difficulty concentrating, or drooling
  • Palpitations or shortness of breath
  • Light sensitivity, dry eyes, ringing in the ears, or ear pain
  • Sore throat, flatulence, or stomach pain
  • Itchy skin or acne
  • Muscle cramps, stiff or swollen joints
  • Thirst, chest pain, or unusual walking
  • Heartburn or stomach upset
  • Hair loss
  • Abnormal head posture
  • Urinary problems such as incontinence, pain, or difficulty urinating
  • Abnormal breast milk production, breast growth in men, or missed periods
  • Abnormal blood, heart, or liver test results
  • General weakness and fatigue
  • Low calcium levels in the blood
  • Slow thinking or lack of emotions
  • Facial drooping or paralysis
  • Partial or complete vision loss in one eye or itchy eyes
  • Difficulty speaking or hiccups
  • Loose stools or skin irritation
  • Inability to open mouth or difficulty emptying bladder
  • Newborn withdrawal symptoms
  • Weakened orgasm or hot flashes
  • Decreased or increased white blood cells (in blood tests)
  • Red, inflamed skin patches covered with white scales (psoriasis)
  • Fever, fast breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, tremors, difficulty swallowing, and reduced consciousness (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
  • Skin reactions, especially rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome), which can be life-threatening
  • Confusion, agitation, high temperature, sweating, lack of movement coordination, muscle twitching (Serotonin syndrome)
  • Fast, irregular heartbeat and fainting (Torsades de Pointes)
  • Persistent, abnormal, and painful erection (Priapism)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ziprasidone or any other ingredient, showing symptoms like rash, itching, face or lip swelling, or breathing difficulties.
  • Do not use if you have or have had heart problems, a recent heart attack, or take medicines for irregular heartbeats or medicines that affect heart rhythm.
  • Inform your doctor if you or your family has a history of blood clots, as this type of medicine can increase the risk of clots.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had seizures or epilepsy.

  • Be cautious if you are elderly (over 65) with dementia, as there is an increased risk of stroke.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a slow heart rate or an electrolyte imbalance from severe diarrhea, vomiting, or water pills.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have a fast or irregular heartbeat, weakness, fainting, or dizziness when standing up, as these could be signs of an abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe skin reactions, such as blistering rash, mouth sores, peeling skin, fever, and skin patches resembling rings (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), as these can be life-threatening.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness, low blood pressure when standing, dizziness, and walking problems, which can lead to falls. Be careful, especially if you are elderly or unwell.
  • Do not use during pregnancy unless your doctor tells you to, as it may harm the baby.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine, as small amounts can pass into breast milk.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Ziprasidon Viatris, as it increases the risk of side effects.
