How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically 500 mg every 8 hours. Doses for children depend on their age and weight.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion (drip) into a vein over 2 hours.

Important

For adults, the typical maximum daily dose is 1500 mg (three 500 mg doses).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Rash, itching or hives
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain, indigestion or heartburn
  • Taste changes
  • Fungal infections in various parts of the body
  • Redness, pain or swelling at the injection site
  • Low sodium levels in the blood
  • Increase in levels of certain liver enzymes in the blood
  • Skin redness due to hypersensitivity
RARE
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Temporary decrease or increase in certain types of blood cells
  • Low potassium levels in blood tests
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances, possibly including anxiety, panic attacks and nightmares
  • Shortness of breath or breathing difficulties, asthma
  • Muscle cramps
  • Kidney problems
  • Swelling, especially in the ankles and lower legs
  • Temporary increase in triglyceride, blood sugar or creatinine levels in blood tests
  • Severe decrease in a specific type of white blood cells (agranulocytosis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Zevtera if you are allergic to this medicine or similar antibiotics (cephalosporins, penicillins, carbapenems).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as your dose may need to be lowered.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had seizures.
  • If you get severe diarrhea during or after treatment, do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without talking to your doctor first.
  • Tell your doctor if you are HIV-positive, have a weakened immune system, low white blood cell count, or poor bone marrow function.

  • Avoid giving calcium-containing solutions through the same IV line (except Ringer's lactate).
  • This medicine may cause dizziness and affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.
