How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose for you or your child to bring calcium levels back to normal, usually starting with 10 ml for adults.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow injection into a vein (intravenously) while you are lying down, with your heart carefully monitored.

Important

Your doctor will decide the maximum amount you can have each day based on your calcium levels.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Slow or irregular heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure
  • Circulatory collapse (may be fatal)
  • Widening of blood vessels
  • Hot flashes (usually if injected too fast)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Severe, sometimes fatal, reactions have been reported in premature and newborn babies (under 28 days old) who received ceftriaxone and calcium intravenously. This caused calcium-ceftriaxone deposits in their lungs and kidneys.
  • Skin peeling and tissue damage (if the medicine leaks outside the vein)
  • Redness, burning, or pain at the injection site (can lead to tissue damage)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to calcium gluconate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have high calcium levels in your blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you take heart medicines (like digitalis), as Zeltacin can make their effects stronger. You might only receive this medicine if your calcium levels are dangerously low.
  • If you have severe kidney problems, Zeltacin should only be given if absolutely necessary, and your calcium and phosphate levels will be monitored.
  • Do not use Zeltacin at the same time as the antibiotic ceftriaxone, especially in premature or newborn babies, as this can cause very serious, even fatal, side effects.
Show 3 more warnings
  • The injection must be given slowly into a vein; fast injection can cause heart or blood vessel problems.
  • If the solution leaks outside the vein, it can cause severe tissue irritation and damage at the injection site.
  • Avoid taking high doses of Vitamin D while using this medicine.
