How to Use

Dosage

Always take Zeclar exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

Method

Take the tablets with plenty of water, preferably at the same time each day, with or without food.

Important

Your doctor will tell you the maximum daily dose you should take. Do not take more than prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sleeplessness
  • Headache
  • Changes in taste
  • Diarrhea

  • Indigestion, stomach pain
  • Abnormal blood test results (e.g., increased liver enzymes)
  • Rash
  • Increased sweating
RARE
  • Infections like stomach and gut infections, skin infections, and yeast infections in the mouth or vagina.
  • Decrease in white blood cells (which fight infections).
  • Mild allergic reactions like rash, swelling, itching, and hives.
  • Decreased appetite or loss of appetite.
  • Anxiety.
  • Nervousness.
  • Fainting, dizziness, trembling, and drowsiness.
  • Ringing in the ears, vertigo (feeling of spinning), and other ear problems.
  • Weakness, chest pain, swelling of the face, general discomfort, pain, and thirst.
  • Changes in heart rhythm, abnormal heart electrical activity (prolonged QT interval on ECG).
  • Asthma and shortness of breath.
  • Nosebleed.
  • Constipation, pain in the rectum, dry mouth, too much gas in the stomach, burping, and flatulence.
  • Heartburn, inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), mouth inflammation (stomatitis), and tongue inflammation (glossitis).
  • Muscle pain, muscle cramps.
  • Chills, fatigue, fever.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Zeclar if you are allergic to clarithromycin, other similar antibiotics (macrolides), or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Zeclar if you are taking certain medicines for allergies, stomach problems, or mental illness, as this can cause dangerous heart rhythm problems.
  • Do not take Zeclar if you are taking ergot medicines for migraines or midazolam for anxiety or sleeplessness.
  • Do not take Zeclar if you are using colchicine (for gout) or medicines containing lomitapide.
  • Stop taking Zeclar and call your doctor right away if you get severe diarrhea with blood or mucus, even weeks after treatment.

  • Stop taking Zeclar and get urgent medical help if you have a rash, trouble breathing, faint, or have swelling in your face and throat. These are signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Stop taking Zeclar and call your doctor right away if you lose your appetite, your skin turns yellow, your urine is dark, you itch, or your stomach hurts. These can be signs of liver problems.
  • Get urgent medical help if you get severe skin reactions like blisters on your skin, mouth, lips, eyes, and genitals, or a red, peeling rash with bumps and blisters.
  • Call your doctor if you have muscle pain or weakness, especially if it's severe, as it could lead to kidney damage.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. Zeclar is not recommended during these times.
  • Zeclar can make you feel dizzy. If so, do not drive or use machines.
  • Always tell your doctor about all your health conditions and other medicines you are taking, especially if you have heart, kidney, or liver problems, low potassium or magnesium, or if you take blood thinners, cholesterol-lowering drugs, or certain malaria/arthritis medicines like hydroxychloroquine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Reduce the dose in renal or hepatic impairment. Risk of QT prolongation. Consider potential significant interactions. (updated 6.11.2023)
