How to Use

Dosage

Start with half a tablet (12.5 mg) once daily for the first week. Your doctor will slowly increase your dose to find the best amount for you, typically 25-100 mg daily, divided into two or three doses.

Method

Take Xenazine exactly as your doctor tells you, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 37.5 mg in a single dose or more than 100 mg in one day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Depression and thoughts of suicide.
  • Feeling restless or unable to sit still.
  • Symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease, like muscle stiffness, trembling, and problems with walking or balance.
  • Agitation, anxiety, confusion.
  • Feeling sleepy or drowsy.
  • Trembling or shaking.
  • Too much saliva or drooling.
  • Difficulty sleeping or insomnia.
  • Trouble swallowing, feeling sick, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth.
  • Increased appetite, weight gain.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Tiredness, weakness.
  • Nervousness or restlessness.
  • Sleep disturbances.
RARE
  • Suicide attempts or self-harm.
  • Feelings of anger or aggressive behavior.
  • Severe reaction with high fever, sweating, muscle stiffness, and fast or irregular heartbeat (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Pneumonia, especially if you have trouble swallowing.
  • Eye spasms where your eyes turn upwards for a long time (oculogyric crisis).
  • Lowered ability to fight infections due to fewer white blood cells.
  • Loss of appetite, dehydration, and weight loss.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Rash, itching, or hives on the skin.
  • Falls.
  • Dizziness and feeling faint when standing up (low blood pressure).
  • Slow heart rate.
  • Confusion about time and place (disorientation).
  • Difficulty coordinating movements or muscle tone problems.
  • Memory loss.
  • Sudden severe rise in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis).
  • Irregular or missed periods in women.
  • Low body temperature.
  • Abnormal liver test results.
  • High prolactin levels in blood, possibly leading to breast discharge, breast enlargement in men, or sexual problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Xenazine if you are allergic to tetrabenazine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Xenazine if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take Xenazine if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not take Xenazine if you have severe depression or have had thoughts about harming yourself or suicide.
  • Do not take Xenazine if you have taken certain depression medicines (MAOIs) in the last 14 days, or reserpine in the last 20 days.

  • Do not take Xenazine if you have a type of Parkinson's disease with stiff muscles and difficulty moving.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have a heart condition called long QT syndrome, unstable angina, or have recently had a heart attack.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you feel very restless or agitated and cannot sit still.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience jerky, uncontrolled movements of your arms and legs.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience muscle stiffness, high fever, sweating, changes in your mental state, or a very fast or uneven heartbeat (signs of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you feel very sleepy, as Xenazine can cause significant drowsiness.
