How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is usually 0.25–0.5 mg three times a day. The normal daily dose is 0.5–4 mg, divided into several doses.

Method

Take the tablets exactly as your doctor has instructed. They start to work within 1–2 hours.

Important

Do not exceed a daily dose of 4 mg. Treatment should not last longer than 2–4 weeks.

  • Drug dependence
  • Withdrawal syndrome (symptoms after stopping the medicine)
  • High prolactin levels in blood

  • Disturbed thoughts
  • Overactivity
  • Autonomic nervous system disorder (problems with automatic body functions)
  • Muscle stiffness/tone disorder
  • Digestive problems
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)

  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
  • Angioedema (sudden swelling of skin or mucous membranes)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Urinary retention (trouble emptying the bladder)
  • Swelling in arms/legs
  • Increased eye pressure
  • Misuse

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to alprazolam, similar medicines (benzodiazepines), or any other ingredient in Xanor.
  • Do not use if you have myasthenia gravis (a disease causing severe muscle weakness).
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems or sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep).
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, breathing difficulties, or if you are generally unwell or elderly.

  • Xanor is not recommended for children and young people under 18 years old.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Xanor, as it can make the medicine's calming and central nervous system effects much stronger.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Xanor can make you feel sleepy, forgetful, less focused, or cause muscle weakness, which can affect your ability to drive or use machines.
  • Do not stop taking Xanor suddenly without your doctor's advice, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. A long-acting. Increases the risk of drug addiction, cognitive disorder and traffic accidents. Increases risk of falls. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. (updated 15.1.2024)
