How to Use

Dosage

Typically, treatment starts with 0.25-0.5 mg, three times a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Take Xanor tablets exactly as your doctor tells you.

Important

Do not take more than 4 mg per day, divided into several doses.

  • Inability to control urine (incontinence)
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Drug dependence (addiction)
  • Withdrawal symptoms (when stopping the medicine)
  • High levels of a hormone called prolactin in the blood
  • Mild mania (hypomania)
  • Aggression
  • Hostility
  • False beliefs (delusions)
  • Overactivity
  • Problems with body functions (like heart rate, digestion) due to autonomic nervous system disorder
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms (muscle tone disorders)
  • Stomach or bowel problems
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Liver problems
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema)
  • Skin sensitivity to light (photosensitivity)
  • Difficulty urinating (urinary retention)
  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Increased pressure in the eye
  • Misuse of the drug

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to alprazolam, other similar medicines (benzodiazepines), or any other ingredients in Xanor.
  • Do not use if you have myasthenia gravis (a severe muscle weakness disease).
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems or sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep).
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.
  • Xanor is not recommended for children and young people under 18 years old.

  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Xanor, as it makes the medicine's calming effects stronger.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby.
  • Xanor can make you feel tired, forgetful, or affect your concentration and muscle control, making it unsafe to drive or use machines.
  • Do not stop taking Xanor suddenly, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms. Your dose should be reduced slowly as advised by your doctor.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, breathing difficulties, or if you are elderly or generally unwell.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. A long-acting. Increases the risk of drug addiction, cognitive disorder and traffic accidents. Increases risk of falls. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. (updated 15.1.2024)
