How to Use

Dosage

One drop in the affected eye(s) once a day.

Method

Administer preferably in the evening. If using contact lenses, remove them before applying drops and wait 15 minutes before reinserting.

Important

Do not use Xalatan more than once a day, as using it more often can make it less effective.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Your eye color may slowly change and become more brown. This is permanent.
  • Redness in the white part of your eye.
  • Eye irritation (like burning, itching, stinging, or feeling like something is in your eye).
  • Your eyelashes and fine hair around the treated eye may slowly change (become darker, longer, thicker, or more numerous).
  • Irritation or damage on the surface of your eye.
  • Swelling of your eyelids (blepharitis).
  • Eye pain.
  • Being sensitive to light.
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis).
RARE
  • Swollen eyelids.
  • Dry eyes.
  • Inflammation on the front surface of the eye (keratitis).
  • Blurry vision.
  • Inflammation of the colored part of your eye (uveitis).
  • Swelling in the back of your eye (macular edema).
  • Skin rash.
  • Chest pain or tightness in the chest (angina).
  • Feeling your heart beat fast or unevenly (palpitations).
  • Asthma or trouble breathing.
  • Headache, dizziness.
  • Muscle and joint pain.
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting).
  • Inflammation of the iris (iritis).
  • Swelling or damage that scratches the surface of the eye.
  • Swelling around the eye.
  • Eyelashes growing in the wrong direction or an extra row of eyelashes.
  • Scars on the surface of the eye.
  • Fluid-filled sac (cyst) in the iris.
  • Skin reactions on eyelids, skin around eyelids becoming darker.
  • Worsening of asthma symptoms.
  • Severe skin itching.
  • Eye infection caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV).
  • Worsening of chest pain in people with heart problems.
  • Sunken eyes.
  • Runny and itchy nose, fever (more common in children).
  • Very rare: Cloudy spots on the front of the eye (cornea) due to calcium buildup, especially if you have severe corneal damage.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to latanoprost or any other ingredients in Xalatan.
  • Tell your doctor if you are going to have or have had eye surgery (including cataract surgery).
  • Tell your doctor if you have eye problems like pain, irritation, inflammation, or blurred vision.
  • Tell your doctor if you have dry eyes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe or uncontrolled asthma.

  • Do not use Xalatan if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it is necessary.
  • If your vision becomes temporarily blurry after using Xalatan, do not drive or use machines until your vision is clear.
  • If you use contact lenses, remove them before applying drops and wait 15 minutes before putting them back in, as the preservative can be absorbed and change their color or cause irritation.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had a herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in the eye.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Start and continue therapy under supervision by an ophthalmologist. May cause changes in iris pigmentation and excessive growth of eyelashes. (updated 4.12.2023)
