How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose based on blood tests.

Method

The medicine is given as an injection or infusion directly into a vein, or during hemodialysis. It should not be given under the skin or into a muscle.

Important

For adults and teens 14 and older, the maximum single dose is 1000 mg of iron (20 ml). If you are on hemodialysis, the maximum daily dose is 200 mg of iron.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Flushing (redness)
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Reactions at the injection site (pain, swelling, redness)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Increasing tiredness, muscle or bone pain (may be a sign of low blood phosphate and bone softening).
  • Numbness, tingling, changes in taste.
  • Fast heartbeat, low blood pressure, trouble breathing.
  • Vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea.
  • Skin rash, itching, redness, hives.
  • Muscle, joint, or back pain, arm or leg pain, muscle cramps.
  • Fever, tiredness, chest pain, swollen hands or feet, chills, general discomfort.
  • Inflammation of a vein, anxiety, fainting, feeling weak, wheezing, excessive gas.
  • Pale skin, skin discoloration in areas other than the injection site.
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fever, muscle and joint pain, can occur after the injection.
  • Loss of consciousness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Xabogard or other iron medicines.
  • Do not use if you have anemia not caused by iron deficiency, or if you have too much iron in your body.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had drug allergies, asthma, eczema, or other severe allergies.
  • Tell your doctor if you have systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, an infection, liver problems, or low blood phosphate levels.
  • Xabogard is not for children under 1 year old.

  • If the medicine is given incorrectly, it can irritate the skin or cause lasting brown discoloration.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other iron medicines by mouth, as Xabogard may make them less effective.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
