How to Use

Dosage

For adults under 65, the usual dose is 10 mg once a day. For those 65 and older, the starting dose is 5 mg once a day. Your doctor may change your dose between 5 mg and 20 mg daily.

Method

Take the tablet with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, indigestion
  • Dizziness
  • Itching all over the body
  • Unusual dreams, increased sweating
RARE
  • Flushing, night sweats
  • Blurred vision, enlarged pupils (which can increase the risk of glaucoma)
  • Involuntary shaking (tremor)
  • Low sodium in the blood (symptoms can include dizziness, weakness, confusion, sleepiness, severe tiredness, or feeling generally unwell; more serious symptoms are fainting, seizures, or falls)
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms may include hallucinations, involuntary muscle jerks, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, fever, nausea, and diarrhea)
  • Severe allergic reactions (can cause swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, and sudden drop in blood pressure causing dizziness)
  • Hives, skin rash
  • Excessive or unexplained bleeding (including bruises, nosebleeds, and bleeding from the stomach, intestines, or vagina)
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Agitation and aggression
  • Headache
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin in the blood
  • Feeling a constant need to move (akathisia)
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Inability to open the mouth (trismus)
  • Restless legs syndrome (an urge to move the legs to stop painful or strange feelings, often at night)
  • Unusual breast milk discharge (galactorrhea)
  • Increased risk of bone fractures
  • Sexual problems
  • Abdominal pain (more often in children and adolescents)
  • Suicidal thoughts (more often in children and adolescents)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to vortioxetine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are taking other antidepressants called non-selective MAO inhibitors or selective MAO-A inhibitors.
  • Tell your doctor if you take other medicines that affect serotonin, like certain pain or migraine medicines, as this can increase the risk of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had seizures or have epilepsy that is not well controlled.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had mania.

  • Tell your doctor if you bleed or bruise easily, or if you are pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you have low sodium levels in your blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you are 65 or older, or have severe kidney or liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had high eye pressure (glaucoma). If you feel eye pain or blurry vision during treatment, contact your doctor.
  • This medicine can cause feelings of aggression, agitation, anger, or irritability. If this happens, talk to your doctor.
  • If you have depression or anxiety, you may sometimes have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide. If you have these thoughts, contact your doctor or go to a hospital right away.
  • This medicine is not for use in children or adolescents under 18 years old.
  • It is not recommended to use this medicine with alcohol.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first.
