How to Use

Dosage

For the first 24 hours (loading dose), 6 mg/kg every 12 hours. After the first 24 hours (maintenance dose), 4 mg/kg twice daily.

Method

Given as an intravenous infusion (drip into a vein) at a maximum rate of 3 mg/kg/hour over 1 to 3 hours.

Important

The maximum daily maintenance dose is typically 8 mg/kg, given as 4 mg/kg twice a day. Your doctor may adjust this.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Blurred vision, changes in color vision, sensitivity to light, or seeing flashing lights.
  • Fever.
  • Skin rash.
  • Feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), or diarrhea.
  • Headache.
  • Swelling in arms and legs.
  • Stomach ache.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • High levels of liver enzymes in blood tests.
  • Low numbers of red or white blood cells (sometimes with fever), or platelets.
  • Low blood sugar, low potassium, or low sodium in the blood.
  • Anxiety, depression, confusion, agitation, trouble sleeping, or hallucinations.
  • Seizures, tremors, uncontrolled muscle movements, tingling or unusual skin sensations, drowsiness, or dizziness.
  • Irregular heartbeat, including very fast or very slow heart rate, or fainting.
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation, or liver damage.
  • Kidney failure, blood in urine, or changes in kidney blood tests.
  • Sunburn or severe skin reaction after sun exposure.
  • Hair loss.
RARE
  • Overactive thyroid gland.
  • Severe brain problems due to liver disease.
  • Damage to the optic nerve, cloudy cornea, or involuntary eye movements.
  • Blistering skin reaction to light (photosensitivity).
  • A disorder where the body's immune system attacks peripheral nerves.
  • Life-threatening allergic reaction.

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you've had an allergic reaction to other similar medicines (azoles).
  • Inform your doctor if you have or have had liver problems. Your doctor might give you a lower dose and will monitor your liver with blood tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a known heart muscle disease, irregular heartbeat, slow heartbeat, or abnormal ECG (long QTc syndrome).
  • Avoid direct sunlight and protect your skin with clothing and high SPF sunscreen, as this medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you get sunburn, severe rash, blisters, or bone pain while taking this medicine.

  • Long-term use of this medicine may slightly increase the risk of skin cancer. Your doctor may recommend regular skin checks.
  • Tell your doctor if you notice signs of adrenal insufficiency (e.g., severe tiredness, muscle weakness, weight loss) or Cushing's syndrome (e.g., weight gain, round face, darker skin).
  • Your doctor will monitor your kidney function with blood tests.
