Vimovo

Vimovo is a medicine that contains naproxen to relieve pain and inflammation, and esomeprazole to protect the stomach, used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

How to Use

Dosage

One tablet twice a day as prescribed by your doctor.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water at least 30 minutes before a meal; do not chew, divide, or crush them.

Important

Maximum two tablets per day.

  • Stomach ulcer or ulcer in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum)
  • Inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis)

RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with sudden wheezing, swelling of the lips, tongue and throat or body parts, fainting or difficulty swallowing.
  • Severe skin reactions with sudden rash, redness and blistering or peeling of the skin, potentially affecting lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals, which can be life-threatening.
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark urine and fatigue (signs of liver problems).
  • Chest pain radiating to the neck, shoulders and left arm, confusion, muscle weakness or numbness on one side of the body (signs of heart attack or stroke).
  • Black, sticky stools or bloody diarrhea, or vomiting blood or dark particles resembling coffee grounds (signs of internal bleeding).
  • Mouth pain or mouth ulcers.
  • Blurred vision, conjunctivitis (eye inflammation) or eye pain.
  • Strange dreams.
  • Drowsiness.
  • High or low blood sugar (symptoms include thirst, increased urination, hunger, weakness, sweating, and rapid heartbeat).
  • Coma.
  • Inflammation of blood vessels.
  • Perforation (hole) in stomach or intestine.
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (autoimmune disease with joint pain, rash, and fever).
  • Enlarged lymph nodes.
  • Hip, wrist, or spine fracture (especially with high doses and long-term use).
  • Fever.
  • Fainting.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Aggressiveness.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Asthma attack.
  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • Menstrual disorders.
  • Weight changes.
  • Hair loss.
  • Hives (raised, uneven rash).
  • Joint pain.
  • Male breast enlargement.
  • Soreness or swelling of the tongue.
  • Muscle twitching or tremors.
  • Loss of appetite or changes in taste.
  • Muscle weakness or muscle pain.
  • Slowed blood clotting.
  • Difficulty getting pregnant.
  • Fever, redness or other signs of infection.
  • Irregular, slow or very fast heartbeat.
  • Tingling or numbness (feeling like a body part is "asleep").
  • Memory or concentration problems.
  • Agitation, confusion, anxiety or nervousness.
  • General malaise, weakness and lack of energy.
  • Swelling due to fluid retention.
  • High or low blood pressure, causing fainting or dizziness.
  • Rash or blistering of the skin, or increased sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling or hearing things that are not there).
  • Changes in liver function test results.
  • Intestinal yeast infection (Candida).
  • Blood in urine or other kidney problems, possibly with back pain.
  • Difficulty breathing, which may gradually worsen (may be signs of pneumonia or lung swelling).
  • Low sodium levels in blood, causing weakness, vomiting and seizures.
  • Symptoms of meningitis (e.g., fever, nausea or vomiting, stiff neck, headache, sensitivity to light and confusion).
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), with severe abdominal pain radiating to the back.
  • Pale stools indicating severe liver problems (hepatitis), which can lead to liver failure and brain dysfunction.
  • Colitis or worsening of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), with abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss.
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., anemia, reduced white blood cells or platelets), causing weakness, bruising, fever, chills, sore throat, or increased risk of infection.
  • Increased number of certain white blood cells (eosinophilia).
  • Deficiency of all types of blood cells (pancytopenia).
  • Circulatory disorders or blood vessel damage, with symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, weakness, chest pain or general pain.
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood after using Vimovo for more than three months, with symptoms like fatigue, involuntary muscle movements, confusion, seizures, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat. May also lead to low potassium and calcium levels.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to naproxen, esomeprazole, other proton pump inhibitors, or any other ingredient in Vimovo.
  • Do not use if aspirin or other NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) have caused you asthma or allergic reactions (itching, hives).
  • Do not use during the last three months of pregnancy, as it can harm the baby or cause problems during delivery.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver, kidney, or heart problems.
  • Do not use if you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer, or any bleeding disorder.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience rapid weight loss without cause, difficulty swallowing, vomit blood, or have black or bloody stools.
  • Using Vimovo may slightly increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, especially with high doses and long-term use. Do not exceed the recommended dose or treatment duration.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or blurred vision; if this happens, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter ones, as they may affect how Vimovo works.
  • Vimovo is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For short-term use only. Consider adverse renal effect in chronic kidney disease. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Increases swelling, worsens renal and heart failure and causes cardiovascular events. Increases risk of bleeding, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 16.9.2024)
