How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. Take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening, with or right after food, to help prevent stomach problems.

Important

Do not take more than two tablets in one day.

COMMON

RARE
  • Fatigue, weakness
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling in hands, ankles, or feet (edema)
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Liver disease (hepatitis) with symptoms like yellow skin or eyes, nausea, loss of appetite, or dark urine.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) with symptoms like severe and ongoing stomach pain that may spread to your back, along with nausea and vomiting.
  • Angioedema (swelling of face, tongue, or throat, trouble swallowing or breathing, sudden rash or hives).
  • Signs of high lactic acid in the blood (lactic acidosis) like tiredness or dizziness, bad nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, irregular heartbeat, or deep, fast breathing.
  • Redness of skin, itching.
  • Low vitamin B12 levels (pale skin, tiredness, confusion, memory problems).
  • Local skin peeling or blisters, inflammation of blood vessels in the skin (vasculitis) which may cause a rash or small red spots/bruises under the skin.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to vildagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have uncontrolled diabetes with very high blood sugar, feel sick, vomit, have diarrhea, or lose weight quickly, or if you have a serious condition called lactic acidosis.
  • Do not take this medicine if you recently had a heart attack, have heart failure, or severe circulation or breathing problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away or go to the nearest hospital if you have symptoms of lactic acidosis, which is a very serious but rare side effect. Symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling unwell, being very tired, trouble breathing, low body temperature, and slow heart rate.

  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had problems with your pancreas.
  • If you are taking another diabetes medicine called a sulfonylurea, your doctor might lower its dose to prevent low blood sugar.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
