How to Use

Dosage

One tablet twice a day.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water, taking one in the morning and one in the evening, either with or right after a meal to reduce stomach problems.

Important

Usually no more than two tablets per day, as directed by your doctor.

RARE
  • Signs of high lactic acid in the blood, such as drowsiness or dizziness, severe nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, irregular heartbeat, or fast breathing. This is a very serious condition.
  • Swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, sudden rash, or hives (angioedema).
  • Liver disease (hepatitis), with symptoms like yellow skin and eyes, nausea, loss of appetite, or dark urine.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), with severe and constant stomach pain that may spread to your back, with nausea and vomiting.
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Low blood sugar
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling of hands, ankles or feet (edema)
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Skin redness, itching
  • Low vitamin B12 levels, which can cause paleness, tiredness, confusion, or memory problems
  • Localized skin peeling or blisters, inflammation of blood vessels in the skin (vasculitis) which may cause a rash, tiny flat red spots under the skin, or bruising.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to vildagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if your diabetes is poorly controlled, you have very high blood sugar, feel sick, vomit, have diarrhea, or rapidly lose weight. This includes serious conditions like ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis.
  • Do not take if you have recently had a heart attack, heart failure, severe blood circulation problems, or breathing difficulties, as these can be signs of heart issues.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection or are severely dehydrated (lost a lot of body fluids).

  • Stop taking this medicine before an X-ray scan that uses contrast dye, and for some time after. Your doctor will tell you when to stop and restart.
  • Do not take if you have liver problems, or if you had to stop vildagliptin before due to liver disease.
  • Avoid heavy alcohol use (daily or occasionally) while on this medicine, as it can increase the risk of a serious side effect called lactic acidosis.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you think you might be pregnant, talk to your doctor.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis: vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling unwell, extreme tiredness, trouble breathing, low body temperature, or a slow heartbeat. Lactic acidosis is a serious medical emergency.
  • Stop taking this medicine temporarily if you have conditions that can cause dehydration, such as severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or not drinking enough fluids. Talk to your doctor.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have or have had a pancreas disease.
  • Watch for skin blisters or sores while taking this medicine. If you notice any, contact your doctor right away.
  • If you feel dizzy while taking this medicine, do not drive or use tools/machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
