How to Use

Dosage

The recommended dose is one 50 mg/850 mg or 50 mg/1000 mg tablet twice daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, one in the morning and one in the evening with or immediately after a meal.

Important

The maximum daily dose is two tablets.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sore throat, runny nose, fever
  • Itchy rash, excessive sweating
  • Joint pain
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Uncontrolled trembling, weakness
  • Constipation
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, heartburn, stomach pain and abdominal pain
RARE
  • Tiredness
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Low blood sugar
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling of hands, ankles or feet (edema)
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Red skin, hives
  • Decreased vitamin B12 levels, which may cause paleness, fatigue, confusion, or memory problems
  • Lactic acidosis: drowsiness, dizziness, severe nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, irregular heartbeat, deep and rapid breathing
  • Angioedema: swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, sudden rash or hives
  • Liver disease (hepatitis): yellowing of skin and eyes, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine
  • Pancreatitis: severe and constant stomach pain that can spread to your back, along with nausea and vomiting

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to vildagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have uncontrolled diabetes with high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include stomach pain, rapid breathing, drowsiness, and a fruity smell.
  • Do not take if you have recently had a heart attack, heart failure, or severe circulation or breathing problems.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney failure or liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection or are severely dehydrated (lost a lot of body fluids).

  • Do not take if you are going for a contrast imaging scan (a type of X-ray using a dye injected into your bloodstream).
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you have previously taken vildagliptin but had to stop due to liver disease.
  • This medicine is not for treating type 1 diabetes and does not replace insulin.
  • If you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as drowsiness, vomiting, stomach pain, or rapid breathing, stop taking the medicine and contact a doctor immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
