How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one film-coated tablet (50 mg/850 mg or 50 mg/1000 mg) twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening, either with or immediately after a meal to lessen stomach upset.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is two tablets (one in the morning, one in the evening). Your doctor may adjust your dose.

RARE
  • Lactic acidosis symptoms: drowsiness, dizziness, severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, irregular heartbeat, deep and rapid breathing. (Very rare, but seek immediate medical help)
  • Angioedema: swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, sudden rash or hives. (Rare, but seek immediate medical help)
  • Hepatitis (liver disease): yellowing of the skin and eyes, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine. (Uncommon, but seek immediate medical help)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas): severe and continuous stomach pain that may radiate to the back, with nausea and vomiting. (Uncommon, but seek immediate medical help)
  • Fatigue
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Low blood sugar
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet (edema)
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Reddened skin
  • Hives
  • Decreased vitamin B12 levels (pale skin, fatigue, mental symptoms like confusion or memory problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to vildagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take if you have uncontrolled diabetes, like very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis.
  • Do not take if you have recently had a heart attack, heart failure, or severe circulation or breathing problems.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection or are severely dehydrated (lost a lot of body fluids).

  • Do not take if you are going to have a contrast X-ray (a special type of X-ray using a contrast dye).
  • Do not take if you drink a lot of alcohol (either daily or occasionally).
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you have symptoms of lactic acidosis (like drowsiness, dizziness, severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, irregular heartbeat, deep and fast breathing).
  • Stop taking this medicine for a short time if you have a condition that can cause dehydration (e.g., severe vomiting, diarrhea, or fever).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
