How to Use

Dosage

One tablet (50 mg/850 mg or 50 mg/1000 mg) twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. Take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening, either with a meal or right after. Taking it right after food helps reduce stomach upset.

Important

Do not take more than two tablets a day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Lactic acidosis (very rare): severe vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general feeling of being unwell and severe tiredness, trouble breathing, low body temperature, and slow heartbeat. Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
  • Angioedema (rare): swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing, trouble breathing, sudden rash, or hives. Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
  • Liver disease (hepatitis) (uncommon): yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, loss of appetite, or dark urine. Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
  • Pancreatitis (uncommon): severe and constant pain in your stomach, which can spread to your back, along with nausea and vomiting. Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

  • skin peeling or blisters
  • inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), which can cause rash, pinpoint red spots, or bruising under the skin
  • low vitamin B12 levels (pale skin, tiredness, confusion, memory problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to vildagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if your diabetes is poorly controlled, you have very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or if you have lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis (serious conditions that can lead to coma).
  • Do not take if you have recently had a heart attack, heart failure, severe blood circulation problems, or breathing difficulties.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection or are severely dehydrated (lost a lot of body fluid).

  • Stop taking this medicine if you are going to have an X-ray where a dye is injected into your blood vessels. Your doctor will tell you when to stop and restart.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Discuss risks with your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be.
  • This medicine is not a substitute for insulin and should not be used for type 1 diabetes.
  • Pay close attention to any blisters or sores on your skin, as diabetic skin problems are common. Contact your doctor immediately if these occur.
  • If you are having major surgery, you must stop taking this medicine for a period before and after the procedure. Your doctor will advise when to stop and restart.
  • Your liver function will be checked before starting treatment and regularly during the first year. Your kidney function will be monitored at least once a year, or more often if you are older or have kidney problems.
  • If you feel dizzy while taking this medicine, do not drive or use any tools or machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
