How to Use

Dosage

10–15 ml (2–3 teaspoons)

Method

For external use, rub the recommended amount onto your chest, throat, and back for 3–5 minutes. Wear loose clothing. For inhalation, dissolve 5–10 ml (1–2 teaspoons) in 0.5 liters of very hot (not boiling) water and breathe in the steam for 5–15 minutes.

Important

Do not use more than 4 times a day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Mild skin redness, itching, burning sensation, or rash at the application site. (Usually disappears within 24 hours).
  • Contact dermatitis (skin rash from contact).
  • Eye irritation, including redness, swelling, and pain (especially with steam inhalation).
  • Unpleasant feeling in the nose.
  • Cough.
  • Burns at the application site.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient in Vicks VapoRub.
  • Do not put the ointment on broken skin, wounds, or mucous membranes (like inside the nose, eyes, or mouth). It is for external use only.
  • Do not use tight bandages or heat wraps over the area where you applied the ointment.
  • Do not use Vicks VapoRub externally on children under 2 years old. Do not use for steam inhalation on children under 6 years old.
  • If you have asthma or a history of breathing problems, talk to a doctor before using this medicine.

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using.
  • If you use too much or if a child accidentally swallows it, contact a doctor or poison control center right away.
  • Stop using and get immediate medical help if you have severe difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips, face, or throat, as these could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
