Venotrix is a medicine that contains iron, used when your body does not have enough iron, a condition called iron deficiency.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide how much Venotrix you need and how often you will receive it, based on your blood test results.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Venotrix as a slow injection into a vein, as an intravenous drip (infusion), or during hemodialysis, usually 1 to 3 times a week.

Important

The maximum amount of iron in one injection is 200 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Temporary changes in taste (especially a metallic taste)
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Reactions at the injection or infusion site, such as pain, irritation, itching, bruising, or skin discoloration from the medicine leaking under the skin.
RARE
  • Headache or feeling dizzy
  • Stomach pain or diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Itching or skin rash
  • Muscle cramps or pain
  • Tingling or 'pins and needles' sensation, or reduced sense of touch
  • Inflammation of a vein
  • Flushing or burning sensation
  • Constipation
  • Joint pain, limb pain, or back pain
  • Chills
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Swollen hands and feet
  • General pain
  • Increased levels of liver enzymes or serum ferritin in the blood
  • Fainting
  • Drowsiness or lethargy
  • Heart palpitations (feeling fast heartbeats)
  • Changes in urine color
  • Chest pain
  • Increased sweating
  • Fever
  • Increased levels of lactate dehydrogenase in the blood
  • Flu-like symptoms (such as fever, muscle and joint pain) may appear a few hours or days after the injection.
  • Decreased level of consciousness, confusion, or loss of consciousness
  • Anxiety, tremors, or shaking
  • Swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat which can cause breathing difficulties
  • Slowed or fast heart rate
  • Circulatory collapse
  • Vein inflammation leading to blood clot formation
  • Acute narrowing of airways
  • Hives, other skin rashes or skin redness
  • Cold sweat, general feeling of illness, or pale skin
  • Sudden life-threatening allergic reactions

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to Venotrix, the iron it contains, or any other ingredients, or if you have had severe allergic reactions to other iron medicines given into a vein.
  • Do not use this medicine if your anemia is not caused by a lack of iron, or if you have too much iron in your body, or if your body cannot use iron due to inherited reasons.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you have had drug allergies, autoimmune diseases (like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis), severe asthma, eczema, other allergies, any infections, or liver problems.
  • Do not take Venotrix at the same time as iron medicines taken by mouth. Wait at least 5 days after your Venotrix treatment before taking any iron medicine by mouth.
  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using Venotrix.

  • Venotrix may cause dizziness, confusion, or lightheadedness. Do not drive or use machines if you have these symptoms, and talk to your doctor.
  • Venotrix is not recommended for use in children.
