Venofer is a medicine that contains iron, used when your body doesn't have enough iron, a condition called iron deficiency.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide how much Venofer you need based on your blood tests.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Venofer directly into a vein: either as a slow injection, as a drip (infusion), or through a dialysis machine during dialysis.

Important

Your doctor will decide the total dose and how often you receive Venofer. A single injection can contain a maximum of 200 mg of iron (10 ml).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in taste, such as a metallic taste.
  • Changes in blood pressure (can be low or high).
  • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea).
  • Reactions at the injection or infusion site, such as pain, irritation, itching, bruising, or skin discoloration.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, which can sometimes be severe, causing low blood pressure, facial swelling, trouble breathing, or chest pain.
  • Headache or feeling dizzy.
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, or vomiting.
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing.
  • Skin reactions like itching, rash, flushing, or a burning sensation.
  • Muscle cramps, muscle pain, or joint pain.
  • Tingling, numbness, or a reduced sense of touch.
  • Inflammation of a vein (phlebitis).
  • Constipation.
  • Pain in your arms or legs, or back pain.
  • Chills, feeling weak, or very tired.
  • Swelling in your hands and feet.
  • Fainting or feeling drowsy.
  • Fast heartbeats (palpitations).
  • Fever or increased sweating.
  • Flu-like symptoms (like fever, muscle, and joint pain) a few hours or days after the injection.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Venofer or any of its ingredients, or if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other iron medicines given into a vein.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any infections, severe asthma, eczema, liver problems, lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, or past allergies to medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • If you feel dizzy or confused after receiving Venofer, do not drive or use machines.
  • Venofer is not recommended for use in children.
