How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 75 mg once daily; for panic disorder, it might start at 37.5 mg.

Method

Take the capsule whole with liquid, with food, at roughly the same time each day (morning or evening). Do not open, crush, chew, or dissolve it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 375 mg for depression and 225 mg for anxiety disorders.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, drowsiness
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea, dry mouth, constipation
  • Sweating (including night sweats)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Confusion, feeling detached from oneself
  • No orgasm, low sex drive, agitation, nervousness, unusual dreams
  • Tremors, restlessness or inability to sit/stand still, tingling/numbness
  • Altered taste, increased muscle tension
  • Vision problems, blurred vision, dilated pupils, difficulty focusing
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus)
  • Fast heartbeat, palpitations
  • Increased blood pressure, flushing
  • Shortness of breath, yawning
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Mild rash, itching
  • Increased urination, inability to urinate, difficulty urinating
  • Menstrual problems (increased bleeding, irregular bleeding), ejaculation/orgasm problems (men), erectile dysfunction
  • Weakness, tiredness, chills
  • Weight gain, weight loss
  • Increased cholesterol levels
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (swelling of face, mouth, tongue, throat, hands, or feet, hives, difficulty swallowing or breathing) – seek medical help immediately.
  • Serotonin syndrome (restlessness, hallucinations, fast heartbeat, high fever, confusion, severe muscle stiffness, nausea, vomiting) – seek medical help immediately.
  • Signs of infection (high fever, chills, shaking, headache, sweating) – seek medical help immediately.
  • Severe skin rash with blisters and peeling, unexplained muscle pain – seek medical help immediately.
  • Seizures
  • Excessive fluid retention, low sodium levels in blood
  • Severe eye pain and vision loss
  • Abnormal, fast or irregular heartbeat leading to fainting
  • Severe stomach or back pain
  • Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), dark urine (signs of liver inflammation)
  • Prolonged bleeding, abnormal breast milk production, unexpected bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, blood in urine)
  • Suicidal thoughts and aggression
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding after childbirth

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to venlafaxine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are using or have used MAO inhibitors (medicines for depression or Parkinson's disease) in the last 14 days, as it can cause serious side effects.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
  • Inform your doctor if you have eye problems like glaucoma (increased eye pressure).
  • Tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, heart problems, or an abnormal heart rhythm.

  • Let your doctor know if you have a history of seizures.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had low sodium levels in your blood.
  • Inform your doctor if you have bleeding disorders or are taking medicines that increase bleeding risk (e.g., blood thinners).
  • Tell your doctor if you or a close relative has had mania or bipolar disorder.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of aggressive behavior.
  • This medicine can cause restlessness or difficulty sitting or standing still, especially at the beginning of treatment. Tell your doctor if this happens.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment, as it can cause extreme tiredness and unconsciousness.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.
  • Dry mouth is a common side effect, which can increase the risk of tooth decay. Maintain good dental hygiene.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Do not drive or use machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. (updated 12.2.2024)
