How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 75 mg once daily, but your doctor may adjust it.

Method

Take the capsules whole with liquid. Do not divide, crush, chew, or dissolve them. Take the medicine with food, at roughly the same time each day (morning or evening).

Important

For depression, the maximum dose can be up to 375 mg daily. For other anxiety disorders, the maximum dose is 225 mg daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, drowsiness
  • Feeling sick (nausea), dry mouth, constipation
  • Sweating, including night sweats
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Shaking (tremor), feeling restless
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Blurred vision
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction: swelling of face, mouth, tongue, throat, hands or feet, itchy rash (hives), or trouble swallowing or breathing. Get help right away.
  • Severe serotonin syndrome: confusion, seeing or hearing things that aren't there, fast heartbeat, high fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or feeling very sick. Get help right away.
  • Seizures
  • Unexplained bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, bleeding gums) or bruising easily
  • Severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin
  • Itching, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, or flu-like symptoms (signs of liver problems)
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to venlafaxine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are currently taking or have taken certain other medicines for depression (called MAO inhibitors) in the last 14 days, as this can be dangerous.
  • If you feel restless, see or hear things that aren't there, have a fast heartbeat, fever, or feel sick, contact a doctor immediately as these could be signs of serotonin syndrome.
  • Do not drink alcohol during treatment, as it can make you very sleepy or pass out and worsen your symptoms.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, contact a doctor or go to a hospital immediately.

  • Do not stop taking this medicine or lower your dose without talking to your doctor first, even if you feel better, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. (updated 12.2.2024)
