How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 75 mg once a day, which your doctor may increase up to 375 mg daily for depression or 225 mg daily for anxiety and panic disorders.

Method

Take your capsule whole with liquid, either in the morning or evening, at about the same time each day, and with food. Do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve the capsule.

Important

The maximum daily dose for depression is 375 mg; for anxiety and panic disorders, it is 225 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, drowsiness
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea, dry mouth, constipation
  • Sweating (including night sweats)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Confusion, feeling unreal, no orgasm, decreased sex drive, agitation, nervousness, unusual dreams
  • Tremor, restlessness or inability to sit/stand still, tingling/prickling, altered taste, increased muscle tension
  • Vision problems (blurred vision, dilated pupils, trouble focusing)
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Fast heartbeat, palpitations
  • Increased blood pressure, flushing
  • Shortness of breath, yawning
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Mild rash, itching
  • Increased urge to urinate, difficulty urinating
  • Menstrual changes (more or irregular bleeding); ejaculation/orgasm problems in men; erectile dysfunction
  • Weakness, tiredness, chills
  • Weight gain, weight loss
  • Increased cholesterol levels
RARE
  • Swelling of face, mouth, tongue, throat, hands, or feet; itchy rash (hives); difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Severe skin rash, itching, or hives (red or pale, often itchy raised patches on the skin), sometimes with blistering or peeling
  • Serotonin syndrome symptoms: restlessness, hallucinations, clumsiness, fast heart rate, high body temperature, rapid changes in blood pressure, overactive reflexes, diarrhea, coma, nausea, vomiting
  • Signs of infection (fever, chills, trembling, headache, sweating, flu-like symptoms) that may point to a blood disorder
  • Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
  • Prolonged bleeding (may mean low platelet count, increased risk of bruising/bleeding); unexpected bleeding (gums, blood in urine/vomit, bruises, broken blood vessels)
  • Abnormal milk production from breasts

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to venlafaxine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are using or have recently used (within 14 days) certain other medicines called MAO inhibitors for depression or Parkinson's disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking other medicines that might increase the risk of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor if you have eye problems, like certain types of glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • Inform your doctor if you have had high blood pressure, heart problems, or an abnormal heart rhythm.

  • Inform your doctor if you have had low sodium levels in your blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you bruise easily or have a bleeding disorder.
  • Tell your doctor if your cholesterol levels are high.
  • Inform your doctor if you or a close family member has had mania or bipolar disorder.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of aggressive behavior.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • If you feel depressed or anxious, you might sometimes have thoughts of harming yourself or taking your own life; seek immediate medical help if this happens.
  • Do not drive or use machines until you know how this medicine affects you.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have an intolerance to some sugars, as this medicine contains sucrose.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine or change your dose without first talking to your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. (updated 12.2.2024)
