How to Use

Dosage

Start with one 0.5 mg white tablet once daily for the first 3 days, then one 0.5 mg white tablet twice daily for days 4-7. From day 8 onwards, take one 1 mg light blue tablet twice daily for the rest of the treatment, usually 12 weeks.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is typically 2 mg (one 1 mg tablet twice daily), but your doctor may adjust it.

  • Nausea

  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain, chest pain, fatigue
RARE
  • Severe mood changes, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, aggressive behavior, psychosis (loss of contact with reality, inability to think clearly)
  • Seizures, tremor, coordination problems, speech difficulties, feeling sluggish or numb
  • Heart attack, stroke, irregular or fast heartbeat, high blood pressure
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat, trouble breathing)
  • Severe skin reactions (severe rash, peeling skin, blisters like Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Vision problems (eye pain, watery eyes, sensitivity to light, blurred vision), ringing in ears
  • Bloody vomit or stool, stomach irritation, changes in bowel habits
  • Increased sweating (including night sweats), acne, skin redness
  • Increased or frequent urination, heavy menstrual bleeding, changes in sexual function
  • High blood sugar, diabetes, feeling generally unwell or weak, fever
  • Infections (fungal, viral)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to varenicline or any of its ingredients.
  • This medicine can cause serious mood or behavior changes, including depression, thoughts of self-harm, and suicide attempts. If you or your family notice any worrying changes in your mood or behavior, or if you have thoughts of harming yourself, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you notice any new or worsening heart or blood vessel problems. Seek urgent medical help if you experience symptoms of a heart attack or stroke.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of seizures or epilepsy.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor immediately if you develop signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing.

  • Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash, peeling skin, or blisters.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 years old.
  • Be careful with alcohol as some people have reported increased intoxicating effects when taking varenicline.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or temporary loss of consciousness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
