How to Use

Dosage

You start with one 0.5 mg tablet once a day for 3 days, then one 0.5 mg tablet twice a day for the next 4 days. After that, you will take one 1 mg tablet twice a day, usually for 12 weeks.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2 mg (one 1 mg tablet twice a day).

  • Severe skin rashes with blistering or peeling (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

  • Vision problems or eye pain
  • High blood pressure or fast heartbeat
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Weight changes (gain or loss)
  • Flu-like symptoms or fever
  • Abnormal behavior or aggression
  • Loss of touch with reality (psychosis)
  • Temporary loss of consciousness
  • Changes in taste
  • Trouble breathing or cough
  • Ringing in the ears

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to varenicline or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • This medicine may cause mood changes, depression, thoughts of harming yourself, or suicidal behavior. If you notice any of these, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems or a history of stroke. Seek emergency help if you get symptoms of a heart attack or stroke while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of seizures or epilepsy, as this medicine may cause new or worsened seizures.
  • Stop taking the medicine and get medical help right away if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble breathing.

  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant. Talk to your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
