How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 125 mg every 6 hours; your doctor might increase it to up to 500 mg every 6 hours in some cases.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water, by mouth.

Important

The most you can take in one day is 2 grams (2000 mg).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath, noisy breathing (wheezing)
  • Rash and inflammation of mouth lining, itching, itchy rash, hives
  • Kidney problems, mainly detected by blood tests
  • Redness of the upper body and face, inflammation of a vein
RARE
  • Temporary or permanent hearing loss
  • Decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets; increase in some white blood cells
  • Balance problems, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), dizziness
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Nausea
  • Kidney inflammation and kidney failure
  • Pain in chest and back muscles
  • Fever, chills
  • Sudden, severe allergic skin reaction with peeling, blistering, or flaking skin, possibly with high fever and joint pain
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Intestinal inflammation causing stomach pain and possibly bloody diarrhea
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Confusion, drowsiness, weakness, swelling, fluid retention, decreased urine output
  • Rash with swollen lymph nodes (behind ears, neck, groin, under chin, armpits) and abnormal blood/liver test results
  • Rash with blisters and fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Vancomycin Xellia if you are allergic to vancomycin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an inflammatory bowel condition or kidney problems, as there may be a higher risk of side effects.
  • Tell your doctor if you have hearing problems.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to get pregnant, ask your doctor before taking this medicine, as it should only be used if really needed.
  • If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, do not drive or use machines.

  • Stop taking the medicine and see a doctor right away if you get severe skin reactions like red, ring-shaped spots, blisters, peeling skin, or sores (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, DRESS syndrome, or AGEP).
  • Get medical help immediately if you have a severe allergic reaction, such as wheezing, trouble breathing, rash, itching, or redness of your upper body.
  • Contact a doctor or nurse if you hear ringing in your ears (tinnitus), as this could be an early sign of hearing loss.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Applies to orally administered preparations. There is absorption in intestinal inflammation, which predisposes to systemic adverse effects. This must be considered especially in renal impairment. (updated 10.6.2024)
