How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 125 mg, taken every six hours. Your doctor might give you a higher dose up to 500 mg every six hours if needed.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not chew or crush them.

Important

Do not take more than 2 grams (2000 mg) total in one day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rash, itching, and mouth inflammation
  • Kidney problems shown in blood tests
  • Redness on the upper body and face
  • Inflammation of veins
RARE
  • Temporary or permanent hearing loss
  • Changes in blood cell counts (white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets)
  • Loss of balance, ringing in the ears, dizziness
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Nausea
  • Kidney inflammation and kidney failure
  • Chest and back muscle pain
  • Fever, chills
  • Severe allergic skin reactions like peeling skin or blisters (with fever and joint pain)
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Gut inflammation (colitis) causing stomach pain and possibly bloody diarrhea
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Confusion, drowsiness, lack of energy
  • Swelling, fluid retention
  • Reduced urine production
  • Rash with swelling and pain behind ears, on neck, groin, under jaw and armpits (swollen lymph nodes); abnormal blood and liver tests
  • Rash with blisters and fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to vancomycin or any other ingredients listed in this leaflet.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney issues, especially if you are taking other medicines that can affect your kidneys, as vancomycin can harm them.
  • Inform your doctor if you have an inflammatory bowel disease, as you might experience more side effects.
  • Let your doctor know if you have any hearing problems; you might need hearing tests during treatment.
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek medical help right away if you get a severe rash, peeling skin, blisters, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes, especially with fever or flu-like symptoms.

  • This medicine can sometimes cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel dizzy.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, think you might be pregnant, or planning a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • These capsules are not for children under 12 years old or those who cannot swallow capsules whole. Your doctor may suggest another form of vancomycin for children.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Applies to orally administered preparations. There is absorption in intestinal inflammation, which predisposes to systemic adverse effects. This must be considered especially in renal impairment. (updated 10.6.2024)
